After a strong junior season at Kennedy, Elijah Hughes supplanted himself as one of the most coveted players in the area. The 6-foot-5 senior guard ended any speculation of where he might land Tuesday when he gave his verbal commitment to East Carolina.
Hughes made his decision after visiting ECU last weekend. He also had offers from Albany, Fairfield, Hofstra, Iona, Marist and Siena, and had received interest from high-major programs, including Villanova, among others.
ECU finished 14-19 last season and was 6-12 in the AAC.
After transferring from Beacon, Hughes helped transform Kennedy into one of the area’s top teams. He was named the CHSAA ‘A’ league MVP. He also averaged 15.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game and led Kennedy to a 26-2 season. That included a 23-0 start; a city title; and an appearance in the CHSAA Class A state championship game.
I’ll have more on Hughes’ commitment later.
On Tuesday, Hughes was also one of 24 players who made the first cut for team Hudson Valley, which will participate in the BCANY Summer Hoops Festival this summer. Here’s a look at all the players still in contention for a roster spot.
