The CHSAA coaches met Thursday night to finalize their league structure and schedules for the 2015-16 basketball season. Here’s the headliner: Despite coming off a 26-2 season and expecting to return all but two players, Kennedy will remain in the ‘A’ division.
The Gaels dominated last season, their second in the CHSAA. They claimed the ‘A’ championship and only lost one league game, a regular-season finale at Fordham Prep at the buzzer.
Kennedy will return the majority of its talent from that team, including seniors Elijah Hughes and Dominick Cristiano, both of who were all-state players.
There were actually few changes overall for next season. However, the league plans to host its ‘AA’ semifinals at St. John’s rather than Fordham, which will still host the quarterfinals and final.
Here is a look at each division and how the teams will schedule league games:
‘B’ Division —
Teams: Cathedral Prep, LaSalle, Regis, Sacred Heart, Salesian, St. John’s Prep
Each team will play the rest of the division twice plus one game against the Staten Island ‘B’ team for a total of 11 league games.
‘A’ Division —
Teams: Cardinal Spellman, Fordham Prep, Kennedy Catholic, McClancy, Monsignor Scanlan, Nazareth, St. Edmund’s, Xavier
Each team will play the rest of the division twice plus one game against each of the Staten Island ‘A’ teams for a total of 16 league games.
‘AA’ Division —
Brooklyn/Queens teams: Archbishop Molloy, Bishop Loughlin, Christ the King, Holy Cross, St. Francis Prep, Xaverian
New York: All Hallows, Archbishop Stepinac, Cardinal Hayes, Iona Prep, Mount St. Michael’s, St. Raymond’s
Each team will play its own division twice (home and home) and the other division once. The teams in the New York Archdiocesan will also play the Staten Island ‘AA’ team once. The Brooklyn/Queens teams will play 16 league games and the Archdiocesan teams will play 17 league games.
Staten Island —
‘AA’: St. Peter’s
‘A’: Monsignor Farrell, St. Joseph by-the-Sea
‘B’: Moore Catholic
These schools should play each other twice within Staten Island and play crossover games as outlined above. However, only games played within the same classification will count towards playoff seeding.
St. Peter’s and Moore Catholic will play six league games. Monsignor Farrell and St. Joseph by-the-Sea will play 10 league games, including eight crossovers and two head-to-head.
