Our Rockland All-County boys basketball team was released today and the player of the year — even in an historic season for individual talent in the county — was a no-brainer.
Spring Valley senior Rickey McGill earned Rockland’s top honor for the 2014-15 team. The Iona-bound guard averaged 23.3 ppg and led the Tigers to a 23-2 record, including their first Section 1 title in 19 years.
McGill’s production was the best of his four-year career, but, more importantly, he took control of the team and became a true leader. Never was that more evident than when Section 1’s Mr. Basketball (pictured right) hit the biggest shot of his career to beat Saugerties at the buzzer and send Spring Valley to Glens Falls.
McGill was joined on the first team by the following: Spring Valley’s Kai Mitchell, Tappan Zee’s Luke McLaughlin, Clarkstown South’s Conor McGuinness and Nyack’s E.J. Smith. Willie Worsley of Spring Valley was named the coach of the year.
