Iona Prep’s Matt Ryan was selected as New York’s Mr. Basketball, an award given annually by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York to a deserving member of the senior class.
Ryan, a 6-foot-7 forward from Cortlandt Manor, became the first Iona Prep player ever to win the award, which has been given out since 1986. He averaged 19 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists per game.
The Notre Dame-bound senior was a first-team all-CHSAA selection despite coming off double-hip surgery to repair two torn labrums last spring. He carries a 93 gpa despite missing 40 days of school last year following the surgery.
