Iona Prep’s Matt Ryan was named one of four finalists for New York’s “Mr. Basketball” by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York this week.
The 6-foot-7 senior forward, who is tied for second on the team at 15.8 ppg, has helped lead the Gaels to a 21-5 record, which includes the first ‘AA’ Archdiocesan championship in program history. Iona Prep will open the intersectional tournament in the quarterfinals on Sunday at Fordham University as the No. 1 seed out of the New York Archdiocesan.
Ryan, a Notre Dame signee, was joined by three other senior finalists: Wings Academy big man Jessie Govan (Georgetown); Ogdensburg Free Academy guard Kinnon LaRose (Siena); and Westhill guard Jordan Roland (George Washington).
The last local player honored as “Mr. Basketball” was Mount Vernon’s Jabarie Hinds, who shared the award in 2011.
According to the NYSSWA, the 2015 winners will be announced during the NYSPHSAA state final four, which is schedule from March 20-22.
