I was very impressed tonight with Spring Valley, which moved the ball very effectively against the Tappan Zee zone all game long. Below is my story on that. First, may I recommend this Vine of the third of Kai Mitchell’s ferocious dunks. Enjoy.
ORANGEBURG – Spring Valley had waited three weeks for its rematch with Tappan Zee, yet never looked like an anxious team on Tuesday. The Tigers played methodical (for them), moving the basketball through the zone defense like a bishop on a chess board.
In fact, the Tigers had 20 assists on 33 baskets, including 16 of them from senior stars Kai Mitchell and Rickey McGill en route to a 75-65 victory in their rematch at Tappan Zee High School.
Mitchell and McGill each scored 23 points for Spring Valley (15-1), which was lucky to beat the Dutchmen (11-5) at home in OT on Jan. 14.
“We definitely wanted to play them again,” sophomore Devan Lawson said.
Lawson (pictured right), a 6-foot-3 forward, who transferred from St. Joe’s of Montvale after his freshman year, added 20 points, forming a high-low tandem with Mitchell, who had 11 rebounds and seven assists.
“We’ve been working on that,” Lawson said. “We’re a big team and try to take advantage of that when we can.”
It was Mitchell and McGill who delivered key hoops in the final two minutes. Luke McLaughlin (31 points, 16 rebounds) had cut Tappan Zee’s deficit to 61-58, but his team couldn’t stop Spring Valley from then on.
“Those were gimmes,” McLaughlin said. “We shouldn’t have given those up, and they killed us. I feel like if we got a couple stops, we would’ve been able to score and make this a game. Hopefully, we can see them again soon.”
