BREWSTER — For a team known best for its length and outside shooting, Somers needed a different approach to beat Harrison Saturday. The Tuskers struggled to score in a rugged, contentious four quarters, but their defense proved it was elite, too.
Somers held the Huskies scoreless for the final four minutes, surviving to win 41-38 in the Coaches vs. Cancer Week Tip-Off Classic at Brewster High School.
Senior Anthony Maestri scored nine of his team-high 14 points in the third quarter to earn MVP honors. Senior Matt Maloney added 12, helping the Tuskers (12-3) win despite scoring just three points in the final period.
“We started playing tough and showed some heart,” Maestri said. “At the end of the game, we pretty much just shut them down.”
After a tumultuous second quarter, Somers finally grabbed the lead midway through the third. Maloney hit three free throws after Harrison’s Michael Nannariello was called for two technical fouls. Maestri hit a 3 off the ensuing inbound play to complete a six-point swing.
“That was a huge momentum swing right there,” Maestri said.
Joe Nannariello led Harrison with 13 points, including its last field goal, which tied the score 38-38 midway through the fourth quarter.
In another thriller earlier, Clarkstown South stunned Pelham, winning 55-54 at the buzzer on an odd-angled shot by Conor McGuinness, who escaped from beneath the basket to spin in a layup.
The senior’s basket answered Pelham’s Davis Allen, who scored with 13.3 seconds left to give his team a one-point lead.
“I thought we were in trouble at that point,” McGuinness said. “We didn’t look like we were going to get a great look. Something opened up and I was just happy I could get into position to score.”
McGuinness scored 21 points and earn game MVP honors for the Vikings (11-5). The four-year standout is now just 16 points shy of 1,000 for his career.
