Here’s Adrian Szkolar stepping in for me tonight from Ramapo High School:
SPRING VALLEY – North Rockland might be young, but the team has already been through a lot.
The Red Raiders have been in a lot of close games, including some in overtime. Of the team’s four losses, three were by one point. Those experiences proved helpful on Wednesday as they managed to battle through a persistent Ramapo squad and score a 61-55 win.
“All the overtime games we’ve had have made us smarter with our decisions in the end,” North Rockland guard Evly Davis, the team’s lone starting senior, said. “That helped up pull it out tonight.”
After a back-and-forth first half which saw Ramapo go up 28-26, the Gryphons turned up the pressure. After North Rockland’s Davis scored the third quarter’s opening six points, Ramapo went on 8-2 run to take a six-point lead.
With the game slipping away, North Rockland came back and scored the quarter’s final 11 points to take a 47-42 lead.
Ramapo came back and managed to take the lead back three times in the fourth quarter, but a 3-pointer from Jason Schneider gave North Rockland a 54-53 advantage in what turned out to be the final lead change.
“We had two days off, so we just wanted to come out and play hard,” North Rockland junior guard Mike Arias said. “Most of the time, we come out flat and do well in the second half. We’re going to fix that.”
Arias led North Rockland with 19 points, and Davis finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. For Ramapo, Divine Cesar had 17 points and Wendell Floyd had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
“We got to sort out our defense, we got to come together as a team,” Cesar said. “We were just off a bit, but we’ll be fine.”

Zach Saklad and Jon Getz had 12 points apiece for Ardsley. … Ricky Hicks had 16 points and Jovelle Forsythe had 14 points and six rebounds as Harvey beat South Kent, 56-46. … Dwight Allen had 21 points and seven assists and Justin Daoud added 17 points and 11 rebounds as Palisade Prep defeated Keio, 55-37.
