Here’s a look at this week’s winner:
POTW: Matt Maloney, Somers —
After suffering its first loss on Saturday night at Yorktown, Somers faced its first bit of adversity. The team had been perfect to that point in the season despite five new starters — although one of them was Maloney, who transferred home from Iona Prep for his senior season. Entering the week, he had led the Tuskers in scoring at 15 ppg, but he raised that production in the wake of the Yorktown loss.
Maloney led Somers to a 3-0 week, which included wins over Ossining, Horace Greeley and, in the rematch, Yorktown. He averaged 24.3 points and 6.0 assists per game and hit 12 3-pointers. That included a 3 at the buzzer to send Somers’ game against Ossining to overtime. Maloney went on to hit six 3-pointers in Wednesday’s 28-point effort against Greeley. He finished the week with strong free throw shooting down the stretch to avenge last week’s loss to Yorktown. Maloney finished 10 for 10 from the line against the Huskers and was 21 for 26 (81 percent) for the week.
