Troubling news to report today.
The Mahopac school district is investigating charges that at least one Mahopac basketball used a racial slur during last week’s game against rival Carmel.
Action has been taken against at least one student, according to today’s story by my colleague Nancy Haggerty.
“The language that was reported to me concerns me,” said interim superintendent Brian Monahan, who confirmed it was racial in nature.

Monahan sent the following letter to parents on Thursday:
Dear Mahopac Families,
I want to share information with you about a situation related to the recent Carmel-Mahopac boys varsity basketball game. During the game it has been reported that racially charged language was directed to a member of the Carmel team. The District has taken steps to initially address the situation. We are working with officials at Carmel to fully investigate this allegation. Based on the results of the investigation, if additional action is warranted it will be taken. These allegations would be troubling anyplace; I know they are especially troubling to the residents of this community.
