I’m starting the Player of the Week honorees a few weeks late, but it’s never too late to honor the week’s best.
For me, it’s easy this week. My honoree not only led his team to a perfect 3-0 mark, he also showed signs that he’s all the way back from a very difficult offseason.
POTW: Matt Ryan, Iona Prep —
The area’s top senior recruit just finished perhaps the best week of his three-year varsity career. Ryan averaged 24.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per games as his Gaels routed St. Ray’s, Stepinac and New Rochelle, all by 20 points or more. Ryan started his week especially strong, pouring in 16 points during Iona Prep’s 28-2 surge in Tuesday’s 79-43 defeat of St. Ray’s.
Ryan’s strong shooting and rebounding were at the center of Iona Prep’s best week of the season. The Gaels, who have now won five straight, not only went 3-0, they won the three games by 93 points combined.
The 6-foot-7 Notre Dame commit played his best basketball of the season, which was a great sign for someone who had double-hip surgery last spring. Ryan admitted Friday that his confidence was up with both he and the team playing so well.
