The area’s top football recruit has determined his next home. Iona Prep star Qaadir Sheppard committed to Syracuse today, according to the school’s Twitter account.
Sheppard, a 6-foot-4, 239-pound wide receiver and defensive end, was a two-way starter for the Gaels each of the last two seasons. He was a Super 11 selection this preseason (LINK) and was recently named a first-team Journal News all-star (LINK).
Sheppard received more scholarship offers than any player in the local Class of 2015, including North Carolina, Virginia, Boston College, Central Florida, Rutgers, UMass, Pitt, UConn, Temple, Old Dominion and Buffalo.
He had 58 receptions for 842 yards and 13 touchdowns on offense and recorded eight sacks and five fumble recoveries on defense. The Gaels reached the CHSFL AAA championship game and finished 9-3.
I’ll have more on Sheppard’s commitment after I speak to him.
