A quick programming note: At the behest of you, the readers, I have added the next-day’s schedule at the bottom of the post. I will continue to do that each night.
So, below you’ll find coverage of today’s South-Scarsdale game, quick recaps of other action, today’s scores and a look at Thursday’s schedule. Let me know if you have any corrections and/or additions.
SCARSDALE — The windows to shoot were small and only open for half a breath. That mattered not to Conor McGuinness, who seemed to peak in them as long as he needed, whenever he needed.
“We hedged on him reasonably well,” Scarsdale coach Jon Feld said. “Unfortunately, he shot the ball right over our hedge. That kid can play.”
With help from the bench, McGuinness led Clarkstown South back from a brief fourth-quarter deficit Tuesday night. The senior point guard scored 30 points as the Vikings pulled away at Scarsdale, 74-59.
“This year the coaches have a lot of confidence in me and tell me that all the time,” said McGuinness, a three-year starter who recently accepted a scholarship to Division II Adelphi. “The more confidence they have in me, it give me extra confidence in myself.”
McGuinness showed no hesitance and South needed every bit of his aggressiveness. Behind Christian Landgrebe (19 points) and Caleb Krohn (15), Scarsdale shot itself in front in the second quarter and again in the fourth.
Down 52-49, two baskets from McGuinness and a three-point play from senior Justin Rivera (19 points, 11 rebounds) pushed the Vikings back in front. Anthony Tutweiler and Vince Maraia added a late spark off the bench as South pulled free.
“Give them credit. They hit shots. That’s a team that was successful last year – 17-1 – and they understand what it’s like to play with a lead and play in a close game,” Feld said. “We’re still learning how to do that.”
