WHITE PLAINS — The whole starting lineup was gone, including prized recruit Jordan Tucker, who now plays around the block at Stepinac. But if Spencer Mayfield expected to spend most of Tuesday’s season opener cajoling his young team, he thought wrong.
“It makes me feel pretty good,” Mayfield admitted. “I always have this preseason nightmare that we’re never going to score. So when we actually scored 25, I was like, ‘Whoa.’”
Newcomers Luis Cartagena and C.J. Layne were the primary instigators. Cartagena, a junior transfer, had 22 points and Layne, a junior, dropped 11 of his 21 during the first-quarter surge.
“Everyone’s doubting us, so we want to come out hard and prove that it doesn’t matter what happened, who left or whose returning,” said Cartagena, who started at Yorktown as a sophomore. “We just have to work hard now and get better together.”
The rash of newcomers left Suffern scrambling for information about the Tigers, who finished last season 16-4, but graduated four of their starting five. Tucker, a 6-foot-7 swingman who is among the most coveted sophomores in the nation, left to enroll at Stepinac.
No matter what they learned in preparation for the game, the Mounties (2-1) never expected White Plains to hit eight 3’s en route to a 49-31 halftime lead.
“We didn’t think they had that many shooters,” said Suffern coach Scott Wright, whose team was led by Kevin Jefferson’s 18 points. “I talked to some coaches who had coached against them in scrimmages and no one said they had that kind of outside arsenal.”
