We all know what happened the last time Mahopac played and Kevin Downes coached in a basketball game. Both the Indians and their former coach continued to move forward and forget that ugly night by winning their season openers Friday night.
Mahopac beat Peekskill 74-66 behind 22 points from Dan Foley and 18 from Christian Donahoe. The two juniors were part of a revamped team headed by new coach Jim Harter. Peekskill had just two players on the entire roster with even nominal varsity experience. Of course, the Red Devils also replaced Lou Panzanaro, the section’s winningest coach, with longtime assistant Tim Turner.
I wrote a column off the game about how both teams have started moving forward and how, in Mahopac’s case, that time has definitely come.
Yorktown beat defending Class A champ Panas 51-37 behind 18 points from Mason Dyslin and 15 from Nick DeGennaro. Downes earned his first win with the Huskers, as Adrian Szkolar wrote in his story about the game.
