Matt Ryan hadn’t played a varsity game since early last January. The Iona Prep senior may still have progress ahead in his comeback, but one thing’s certain: His jumpshot is in peak form.
Ryan scored 24 points, had eight rebounds and dished four assists. He also shot a blistering 7-for-13 from behind the arc.
“It felt great,” Ryan said. “I can’t explode or cut like I want to, but I’ll get there.”
The Gaels also felt it as a team. They shot 12 for 22 from 3, including four makes from junior Ty Jerome. The Virginia commit and senior Tom Capuano each added 17 points for Iona Prep. Jerome had five assists and Capuano four.
Best of the rest: In his varsity debut, Tappan Zee junior Robert McWilliams, a Bergen Catholic transfer, scored 34 points to lead the Dutchmen to a season-opening 77-74 victory over Clarkstown South. Luke McLaughlin added 25 points for TZ. Conor McGuinness and Justin Rivera each had 17 points for South. Vince Maraia added 13. … Kylan Guerra had 30 points in Stepinac’s 70-61 defeat of Cardinal Spellman. Sophomore Jorden Means added 13 in his second varsity game. The Crusaders led by 20-plus for much of the second half before Spellman cut the score to single digits by virtue of a 29-point fourth quarter.
