I came close with a nice 8-2 record, but our Week 7 winners were “lg6493” and “Step2K14” who both picked nine games correct. “le6493 pulled into a tie for first place overall with “Jim.” I’m in fifth place, four back.
This week gives folks in our contest the best chance to make up ground all season. We will pick every playoff game — 12 total — so remember to post your predictions.
Josh’s picks —
Top 10: 8-2 (51-19 total)
Overall: 32-8 (205-56 total)
CLASS AA QUARTERFINALS
Arlington 24, North Rockland 7. Arlington is a sleeper in the Class AA playoffs. In fact, I think there are the two favorites and three challengers. For once, it’s the Admirals that fit in that category, but not North Rockland.
New Rochelle 20, Mahopac 7. I think the Huguenots will have to win it with their defense, but they are perfectly capable. Mahopac has a history of giving New Ro a challenge, but it’s been a long time (nine years) since that resulted in a victory.
Mamaroneck 27, Scarsdale 21. In my opinion, this is the game of the week and also the hardest game to predict. Mamaroneck has been consistent all season and has gotten better. Scarsdale might be as good or better at its best, but will we see that on Saturday? I’m not sure. A lot of very good players have not played much in recent weeks, and that uncertainty is why I’m taking the Tigers.
John Jay-East Fishkill 28, Horace Greeley 14. Greeley needs to exploit teams who can’t block and tackle well, but the Quakers are facing the wrong team in John Jay. The Patriots are solid and their offense, both running and passing, will be a bear for Greeley to stop. I just don’t think the Quakers are strong enough defensively.
CLASS A QUARTERFINALS
Somers 35, Panas 20. Panas played Somers awfully tough in last year’s quarterfinals. Is this Panas team as good? It’s been a great season, but I’m not sure — at least not yet. The Panthers have moved the ball really well the second half of the season, and they also haven’t seen a defense as good as Somers in that stretch.
Yorktown 34, Nyack 13. Of all the top contenders, I think Yorktown might’ve been the worst matchup for Nyack. Yorktown has athletes to run with the Indians, but it’s their size that will be the biggest factor. I think Nyack will have trouble stopping Yorktown from moving the ball on the ground.
Rye 41, Beacon 13. This is the one real mismatch in the quarterfinals. Rye will also be out to atone for last week’s loss and show what the offense can do when untethered.
John Jay 38, Sleepy Hollow 27. I expect this one to be high-scoring. (Don’t we all.) But I actually think John Jay is a little stronger defensively and that it will get those couple stops that will be the difference.
CLASS B SEMIFINALS
Ardsley 27, Our Lady of Lourdes 26. Let’s have another crazy game, shall we? That’s what I expect at least. Both teams had a chance to win the last one, but I can’t imagine Ardsley has been more fired up for a home football game in years and years. I like the Panthers to finish strong and advance to the final by a yard or so.
Nanuet 13, Pleasantville 0. These teams always play one-score games, and they usual combine for 20 points or so — sometimes less. In this instance, the home field shifts to Nanuet, which is on the ascent anyway. I like the Golden Knights by more than a TD this time.
CLASS C SEMIFINALS
Rye Neck 27, Dobbs Ferry 7. These teams just played two weeks ago, so there’s no reason to expect a different outcome. Dobbs still has to prove it can score against the elite in Class C. It has just two TDs total vs. Bronxville and Rye Neck this year.
Bronxville 31, Woodlands 6. Woodlands has played all season with low numbers and has done it against a very difficult Class C schedule. And, when attrition is a factor, the last team you want to see is Bronxville. I expect the Broncos to power their way to the championship game.
