Ok, here we go with Week 3.
Last week was solid for me and for many of us, although Yorktown and Scarsdale saddled most (including me) with a couple of losses. I really like the schedule of games this week. I think Friday night in particular could provide some interesting results.
Let’s get to the predictions. (Oh, and no picks’ contest results until next week. Sorry. Blame life for interceding.)
Josh’s picks —
Top 10: 8-2 (15-5 total)
Overall: 28-9 (55-17 total)
GAMES OF THE WEEK
New Rochelle (2-0) vs. John Jay-East Fishkill (2-0)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Where: City Park, New Rochelle
Key players: New Rochelle — Jonathan Forrest, Sr., RB/LB; Corey Holder, Sr., OL/DL; Demetrius Rodriguez, Sr., TE/LB. John Jay-East Fishkill — .
Outlook: With North Rockland’s two-touchdown loss to Scarsdale last week, these two teams might be the favorites in Class AA. As a thriving program, John Jay shouldn’t be intimidated coming to New Rochelle, a place it won back in 2011. Their size and depth should give the Patriots at least two advantages, but New Rochelle is explosive and, like usual, strong on defense. This will be the first true test for the Huguenots’ spread offense.
Prediction: New Rochelle 14, John Jay 7. I don’t expect much offense, but New Rochelle won’t allow John Jay to move the ball much or with any consistency.
Sleepy Hollow (2-0) vs. Rye (2-0)
When: Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
Where: Sleepy Hollow High School
Key players: Sleepy Hollow — Daniel Chevere (6-3, 195), Sr., WR/CB; Joey Good (5-10, 160), Sr., QB/DB; Peter Jelenek (6-3, 202), Sr., TE/DE. Rye — Andrew Livingston (6-2, 200), Sr., QB/K/P; Tim DeGraw (5-10, 145), Sr., WR/DB; Chase Pratt (6-0, 215), Jr., TE/RB/LB.
Outlook: Rye blitzed Sleepy Hollow 43-18 last season in a meeting of unbeatens. Livingston threw six touchdowns, but Sleepy played without star QB Devin Lopez. The Headless Horsemen never had a chance at a rematch until now. Expect the gap between teams to have narrowed, particularly with Rye in the wake of an emotional win over archrival Harrison. Sleepy Hollow has been tested early and responded with wins over rival Ossining and a talented Nyack team.
Prediction: Sleepy Hollow 27, Rye 21. This is an upset based on my rankings, but I like Sleepy for two reasons. 1. I think the gap between the teams has narrowed considerably since last year. 2. I think Rye will have an emotional let down after playing Harrison last week. Going on the road against a good opponent won’t be easy, and Sleepy is good.
THE ELITE EIGHT
Lakeland 21, Panas 13. Eeesh. I don’t like this pick either way. Both teams have impressed so far, and Panas has shown a penchant for rallying late. Either way, I expect this to be one of the most exciting games of the week.
Somers 28, Harrison 14. I don’t have the guts to pick the upset here, mostly because I think Somers will be fired up to play. Harrison is dangerous though.
Clarkstown South 21, Mamaroneck 14. Like Lakeland-Panas, this is a toss-up. Both teams have done well so far, but like who South has done it against a little better.
Scarsdale 28, Clarkstown North 20. I think North will play Scarsdale tough, especially with QB Giancarlo Cugini likely out. But keeping the Raiders off the board is too tough.
Arlington 21, White Plains 14. If Arlington wants to make the playoffs, this is a great place to start. The rest of the schedule is very manageable with three of the last four at home.
Lourdes 14, Pleasantville 7. Lourdes is certainly looking for revenge – and looking to establish itself as the Class B favorite.
Ardsley 34, Irvington 14. Ardsley is a fun team to watch. Let’s see what it is capable of against a solid opponent.
Bronxville 21, Tuckahoe 12. I expect another good game between these two, but Bronxville wins the game up front.
