Hudson Valley completed a perfect weekend today in Johnson City when it beat Central 103-63 to win the gold medal at the BCANY Summer Hoops Festival. Hudson Valley won its second gold in three seasons, and completed the tournament 5-0.
Iona Prep guard Tom Capuano (pictured right) starred in the final, scoring 21 points and dishing out six assists. The senior from Hastings shot 8 for 11 from the field and connected on 5 of 7 from behind the arc.
Teammate Matt Ryan contributed 15 points, and Monsignor Scanlan’s Jonathan Nwankwo (12 points), Rye Country Day’s Salim Green, Masters’ Mike Jurzynski and Woodlands’ Jamil Gambari (11 points each) joined them in double figures. Tappan Zee’s Luke McLaughlin led Hudson Valley with eight rebounds and Spring Valley’s Rickey McGill had seven assists to go along with seven points.
Earlier on Sunday, Hudson Valley won a physical semifinal 97-73 over Adirondack in a rematch of last year’s gold-medal game. McLaughlin had 19 points, most of it based on 17-of-19 shooting at the foul line. McGill had 15 points, six assists, four assists and four steals and Clarkstown South’s Conor McGuinness had 13 points. Nwankwo (11 points, 7 rebounds, 5 blocks) and Capuano (11 points, 4 rebounds) joined them in double figures.
