Mount Vernon football fell on hard times in recent years, but a decade ago the Knights met New Rochelle and Ray Rice for the Class AA championship game. Rodney Mack was a two-year starter at quarterback on that team, one known best for the exploits of Greg Harris and Durrell Abney, but managed expertly by Mack.
Since graduating high school, Mack had acted in three films and recently became a firefighter. But just three days after passing his exam, Mack was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He died last week.
My colleague Thane Grauel shared the tragic news in Monday’s paper. Mack was just 27, and seemed like someone with so much promise fulfill.
