Dan continued to pick up ground on Monday by picking all four games correctly. We both survived a near miss, but it was, instead, another spirited comeback by Tuckahoe. If I was Haldane, I’d want to make sure I played the Tigers to the final buzzer on Friday.
Anyway, the County Center will host two more games today and they should be very competitive and feature excellent crowds. Buckle up.
No. 2 Panas vs. No. 6 Tappan Zee, 6:30 p.m. –
Josh’s pick: Panas, 66-60. I’ve said since the beginning of the tournament that I liked the Beacon-Panas winner to advance to the final. I’m sticking with that pick. I respect Tappan Zee and all those attributes the program seems to have to its advantage in every big game (coaching, intensity, toughness, execution), but Panas has the advantage in three areas tonight: athleticism, depth and playmaking. Even if TZ can take the lead late, it might not be safe with the way it has struggled to protect the ball down the stretch.
Dan’s pick: Tappan Zee, 54-50. Panas has excelled all season at keeping an uptempo pace and winning games by getting up and down the court. If there is one squad that could game plan to slow down the Panthers, it’s George Gaine’s Dutchmen. Tappan Zee also has the benefit of a strong front court, which should give them an edge on the boards and limit Panas’ second-chance buckets.
No. 1 Eastchester vs. No. 4 Harrison, 8:15 p.m. –
Josh’s pick: Eastchester, 79-65. This is not an anti-Harrison pick as much as it’s a pro-Eastchester one. Harrison is in a similar position that Eastchester was in last year, but the Eagles return to the County Center with a very different mindset now. Anything less than a gold ball will be a disappointment to them. They should also benefit from having played three games in this building in the last 12 months.
Dan’s pick: Eastchester, 73-67. This Eastchester team has just looked too good all season to pick against. The Huskies have the benefit of having a stable of guys that can contribute solid points, but I’m not sure they have the firepower to keep up with the Eagles.?
