Dan and I will each pick a Player of the Week from the previous week of games every week this season. If something catches your eye this week (Jan. 20-26) make sure to let us know.
Dan and I will have our five picks for the Games of the Week tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, although it looks like weather could impact them yet again. First, here’s a look at last week’s best individual performances:
Josh’s POTW: Matt Moros, Somers – We always say that we’re looking for great performances in tight games, big victories, etc. Well, in a week where players across the section played outstanding, but all seemed to have a hole or two in their credentials, Moros (pictured above) stood out for what he did in the clutch.
Somers finished the week 2-1 thanks in large part to the senior guard and his efforts down the stretch of both victories. Moros poured in 67 points combined in a one-point loss to Mahopac and wins over Carmel and Clarkstown North. He had 24 points to keep the Tuskers within a hair of upsetting Mahopac, then closed strong against Carmel, scoring 15 of his 21 in the fourth quarter. He followed up with another scoring finish, netting
10 of his 22 in the final period.
All in all, Moros was especially steely at the line. He finished the three games 24 for 27 at the foul line. That was key for a Somers team that has really emerged as a threat in Class A in recent weeks.
Dan’s POTW: Ryan McWilliams, Tappan Zee — The Dutchmen had another big week as they continue to put together one of the better seasons in Class A.
Tappan Zee finished 4-0 to move to 11-2 on the season. The Dutchmen’s record is even more impressive when you consider both losses came against two of the tops teams in the area (Spring Valley, Clarkstown South).
One of the reasons for the Dutchies continued success has been the development of senior forward Ryan McWilliams.
McWilliams poured in 21 points in Tappan Zee’s two biggest wins of the week against league foes Nanuet and Albertus Magnus.
That type of performance will need to continue as Tappan Zee still has two games remaining against Pearl River, who is also undefeated in the league and a favorite to win the title.
