IF STEPINAC IS GOING TO CHANGE THEIR SEASON AROUND TODAY IS A GOOD DAY,I LOOK FOR FOR STEPINAC TO PUT UP A GOOD FIGHT AND SHOW SOME PRIDE,THE QUESTION IS WHEN THEY GET KNOCKED DOWN…..WILL THEY GET UP,GOOD LUCK
Haywood – you are right I hope they fight and play well. Thye still have a lot of games left.
What shows a valiant effort? Loss by less then 12?
I would say down by less than 10 entering the 4th quarter
Beast- keeping it close and hard effort by the starters. We got guards going against guards. They have one big man. Let’s see what happens.
Ok thanks. I hope they show up for Iona in 5 days.
Beating them would make up for a lot of the misery thus far on Mamaroneck Avenue!
Their seems to be a lot of nervousness about the injury to Matt Ryan as it could cause him to miss the rest of the season- Any updates?
IP let’s hope that is not the case. They are not scoring without him. I’m surprised the scoring is so low. You got some good players.
What exactly is wrong with his hip?
Good chance loughlin score 90 today. The question is, how much does air hermos crusaders score?
lol – you are probably right, sad to say. Not sure when they have played good D this year.
I hear Matt Ryan is done for the season.. I hope it’s not true but I heard this from a very very very reliable source who said he is going in for surgery on the hip..
Stepinac will have its hands full..if they play their NO DEFENSE offense they are going to get crushed.. Iona played bishop LOUGHLIN tough by making 3s and playing tough tough d..step has not shown me they can guard anyone. Mount is horrible and they barely won at home? They were up big and let them back in..? I can’t see Step staying in for more then a half..
Iona Step game is now anyone’s game..without Ryan Iona is just as bad..
Iona plays much better team D than Step is playing this year. It pains me to say it because Steo played excellent D the last several years, but this year they just don’t. Even without Ryan, Iona should be the favorite. Without Ryan, Stepinac probably has more talent, but without defense and a coaching disadvantage, Iona should win. If Stepinac shoots well, it could be close.
Guys, Your opening sentence “nice crossover game of public vs. private ??? last I checked both schools were private catholic schools .
Sacred Heart plays in the catholic league. AM plays in section 1, but is a catholic school.
I agree with you..sad but true..also sad to see Ryan out..good kid..good player..he makes the league better..watching step on Friday it was clear that none of them guards wants to get sweaty playing defense..they also say you can’t teach a kid to play defense..he either guards or he doesn’t.. These guys don’t guard..
I watched Stepinac play last year and they “guarded” Walter, naim and Demarcus were 3 important pieces to the success last year. Miller especially, he is one of the best defenders in the league, tough kid, great athlete.
Wether you are playing man or zone, defense is a reflection on the coach and how you practice, period.
Crusaders is 100% right. Miller, Thomas and King all played very hard last year and played D. None of the kids seem to want to play for this coach – not the top 4 kids, not the 5-11 kids. This Step team was far more talented than the Mount team on Friday night, but Mount almost stole the game. The coach clearly isn’t teaching defense and the kids just clearly don’t respond to him.
Lost 78 to 53. Does not sound good.
Do you think the Stepinac season would have been different if they hired thr JV guy Jayson? Not sure. Can not believe how bad this team is playing.
If the AD Mikey OD decides to drop the axe on Coach Herman who will replace him? What about Lou DeMello from Rice who runs the AAU sports program in Ardsley? Anybody else out there? Would Yimmy Philip come back?
I don’t believe anything will be done during the season. If anything it would be the current JV coach. Let’s see how thye play against spell man today?
Can’t believe my Alma Mater posted another 25+ point loss under “The worst coach Stepinac has ever had.”
Waiting until the end of the season to ask for his resignation is just wasting valuable time on the inevitable. I have it on good accord that most of the 8 Juniors on the team will not be playing basketball next year if this guy isn’t gone. The program will fall apart if we have to rely on the Sophomores coming up from JV to hold it down in the CHSAA “AA” League.
Sad thing is that this group could be contending this year, and definitely would contend next year under someone else’s helm.
COACH HERMAN, IF YOU REALLY CARE ABOUT THE PROGRAM, AND YOUR PLAYERS’ FUTURES, PLEASE STEP DOWN NOW.
Give your Seniors a chance to secure some late looks. Don’t force them to have to go to Prep School because you wasted a year of their lives, and they’ll need a “Do Over.”
I think Step’s season would be considerably better if ANYONE else was the coach. I’d heard good things about Herman when he was hired, but he just seems completely out of it and out of his league. He has been far, far worse than I or anyone else could’ve imagined. Its hard to change coaches during the season, but I wish they would make a move. ANY other coach would have a much better chance of getting through to these to salvage their season. The juniors have next year with a new coach to look forward to. The seniors are stuck in this disaster. Bad situation.
I have been saying to give him a chance since the beginning but I am sorry to say that this is a bad fit for all involved. He is a good coach but just not here. I would think the season must run its course. I would get surprised if he is back.. Unless Jimmy Chippawa is enrolled and stands up at the meeting and says ” if coach goes I go”, then a little old lady demands a re vote?
Any suggestions on who could be a good fit?
Having watched Stepinac play last year and this year, I can honestly say that any other coach would do a better job than the current one. This was a team that prided itself on playing hard. They played awesome defense and even when they lost they played their hearts out. Now they play no defense (aside from Tommy Cola who is the reason they beat Mount) there is no offense rebounding and believe it not they don’t even run plays. If their shots are not falling they will not win. Tim Philp built this program up and now it is the joke of Westchester. I feel sorry for the seniors and the administration should do something NOW not wait until the end of the season. No incoming freshman basketball player will even consider coming to Stepinac. Admit you made a mistake and fix it now before it’s too late.
You stated “he is a good coach but just not here”. What do you base this on, jv records at Fordham prep? Means nothing, varsity is a completely different level. Most jv coaches are teachers in the building that coach for the extra stipend.
They play zero defense and run nothing on offense, if you think he is a good coach then everyone else in the league is the next Rick pitino.
A big problem- does he have anyone coming next year? Maybe if you did something now, you maybe able to keep the kids? Or it could be a lost year, if you hired someone else, after the season. I don’t see him coming back next year. Too many mistakes in the year to have him back. No D, lost the team, he has one Ass., what 3 offensive plays? You can’t run and gun in this league without the horses. He should have made changes to his season plans.
I completely. There are very few issues in life that EVERYONE seems to agree on. This coach is one of them. In way over his head, he does not seem like he knows what he’s doing. They run nothing on offense, just lots of standing around and one-on-one with a few picks thrown in. No ball movement, very little spacing. Their team defense is nonexistent…and thats 100% on the coach.
Before the 3,
The one assistant I’ve seen on the bench at Stepinac is the JV coach. Trying to attempt to coach a varsity team by yourself, especially as a new coach, is absurd.
I’m sure there will be plenty of qualified, strong coaches who would want the Stepinac job – though admittedly probably less than last year. Anyone would be better than this debacle.
It’s usually the frosh coach that’s on the bench. He can with him. JV coach wants no part of this.
You’re right, I mixed up the frosh and jv coaches.
you are completely wrong.. Herman did not teach at Fordham Prep last year..neither did the Iona Prep jv coach the Christ the King Jv coach , the molloy jv coach , the All Hallows’ jv coach , the LOUGHLIN jv coach..see a pattern? Most jv teams run no offence ? What are you talking about? Most programs RUN THE SAME OFFENSE FROM VARSITY TO FROSH.. Unlike you I actually know that most jv coaches DONT just coach for a stipend..a lot have been around for years..and if you ever played in this JV league or played for a city championship you would know that these jv coaches and players take this ferry serious. And yes..he was a very good coach at Fordham…you must be a parent of one of the under achieving kids on this team
I agree with your point to BBallFan that none of the coaches in the CHSAA are doing it for the money, and many of them don’t seem to be teachers in the schools. However, I do agree with BBallfan’s larger point that the JV level is the least informative of a coaches talents. Most of the top sophs in the CHSAA AA tend to play up on the varsity. And most of the top freshman stay on the Freshman level (I can only think of one AA freshman playing on the varsity this year (Sidney Wilson at St Ray’s). So the Freshman level is ultra competitive with most of the top freshman playing there and varsity is obviously competitive. The JV level doesn’t see most of the top players in the league. And I also agree with your point that all three levels tend to run the same system in the AA, so the freshman coach actually has the tougher job of teaching all the kids the system, the JV coaches get the kids after a year in the system.
I was referring to stepinacs vars this yr when I said they play zero defense and run nothing on offense.
You obviously have some weird man crush on Herman. Bottom line is you can make up all the excuses you want, but the numbers don’t lie and I feel bad for the kids this year.
Maybe when you get hired as a varsity coach, you can hire Herman as your jv coach and you can tell everyone over and over how you were a 1000 point scorer at the power house Fordham prep.
P.s. maybe you should give Stepinac the heads up that Matt Ryan will be out this Friday so they have some sort of scouting report
no need to bring your homophobic bullying techniques. i am married with kids and grandkids. and 1000+ points anywhere is a major accomplishment. all i am saying is you cant just blame the coach. these kids are under achieving and from what i hear you parents are no help and only make matters worse..plus there is NO D1 talent on this team..maybe demarcus is..in football.
Not sure that the freshman league is anymore competitive than the jv? think about it, the best frosh get sent up to jv..CTK jv is almost half freshman..same as bloughlin..i am sure a lot of programs send up their best frosh..so i would say your wrong in assuming that the freshman games are better..i wont debate team by team which coach iis better the jv or frosh..who really cares but i will tell you this its probably even..
There are a ton of alum that are very upset, not just parents.
And ask the other coaches in the league what they think, definitely not the same opinion as yours.
You sound more informed on the JV and frosh levels than I am, so I’ll assume you’re correct on that. That being said, there is no defending the coaching job at Stepinac this year.
Your comment about there being no D1 talent at Step this year may or may not be true. I think its not true. We’ve all heard Walter King had two offers earlier this season, so that would seem to infer he has D1 talent. We’ve also read that Demarcus Miller and Naim Thomas have been recruited on the D1 level. If Kylan Guerra keeps putting up 20 point scoring games, he’ll be recruited at the D1 level if he’s not already.
Even if none of those 4 kids are D1 players, they are all at worst DII scholarship players and a HS team with 4 DII scholarship players can still be awfully. There are probably no D1 players at MV this year either, but they are still a pretty good team.
Ask the other coaches what? Do you think Joe Lods or Vic Q or Joe Abitello have opinions on Steve’s job performance? The alumni is mad? At what? That Stepinac basketball is non competitive in a very tough league? Where the players are under achieving? In Steve’s defense- these are not his recruits. If my memory serves me correctly the same people on this site were calling for Timmy Philps head a couple of years ago too..so to say a ton of alum are upset means absolutely nothing. This is not Rice HS the basketball team should not be expected to be in the semis every year.
Now I heard rumors that Walter King was getting d1 level looks, from who. Don’t know? Naim is not a D1 level recruit and if the little guy Guerra does not add a few inches or bulk up a ton he is not D1 level. Sorry. He could play in the Ivys, but he is small by Ivy League standards too. Not knocking him..just an honest assesment. That leaves D Miller. He has the athletisism and body type. 2 things I am not sure of YET. Can he consistently get off a shot as a 2 guard and consistently hit it..and can he handle the ball on the dribble against a D1 guard? Defensively at which position does he guard at the next level?
Yes Mount Vernon is good with no D1 athletes but….they all play hard..they all bought onto Bob Cimminos plan..watching Stepinac they don’t play hard. They play no Def .. And they seem to be going through the motions. Is it the coaches fault? Sure but come on some blame has to be attributed to the players who decide to give half and effort.
I don’t remember anyone on this site EVER calling for Tim Philp’s head…ever. His teams always played hard and they were good almost every year. In their first year up in the AA two years ago, Step didn’t have a great record, but they were in almost every game they played. This year they have more 25 point losses than they do wins! Losing by 30 to Hayes, Loughlin or Christ the King is one thing, losing by 30 to St Francis Prep and St Peters along with Fox Lane is another thing.
The two offers I’d read about for Walter King were Norfolk State and Morgan State. As far as your comments about Stepinac’s players, you just discussed four kids as potential D1 players. How many teams in Westchester have that much talent? Not many. Maybe 2-3.
You talk about kids playing hard and playing D at MV. Very true. I think the coach and his system have a lot to do with that. The three returning starters at Stepinac all played very hard and played D last year under Coach Philp. The difference this year is the coach, not the players. I agree kids can often play D better and play harder, but that all starts at the top with the coach.
Stepfan – you have some very good points. I have to comment on a few things. No one thinks we are Rice. Any one who knows this team, wasn’t thinking they we going to win it all. The team should be better, the coach has not show it by what he done out on the court. No o, no d. Yes they are not his kids, from what I know he as no one coming so far.
As to why alum are mad we have a few problems. this team should be better with what they have coming back. Maybe it was all of the promises in the beginning of the year, putting down a lot of what was done the past. If this does nt work out ( I don’t neleive it will) we will be in the hole for awhile. What 2 /3 years?
Hoops fan – right on with the comment.
Have you ever seen coach Herman’s practices? Have you ever seen how they prepare based on scouting reports? Defensive schemes? Out of bounds plays? Offensive philosophies?
You put blame that these kids are not his recruits, ok. Who are the stars he brought in on the freshmen team? Who are the studs coming in next year?
Who is his coaching staff? What are their credentials?
Every year I recall under coach Philip Stepinac Bball was always top 3 in county, even when they struggled their first year up in aa. Bc even then they COMPETED, they didnt give up 80 every night and lose almost every game by 30. And their lower levels all had winning records, why? Because it was a winning program, winning culture, winning staff, period.
So far this season, freshmen 2-12, jv 6-7, var 5-11, all have losing records.
The vars b actually has the best record, sweet!
please note. This team has no height or heart. James Deeker Murry all had huge hearts..and they played as a team..lot to be said about heart..
Actually Stepinac JV has the best record at 7-7. Varsity B is only 3-9!
You also said they
Sec1. You are right about heart. You also had Hoffer and Malik on the team and they played hard.
You guys make great points, things will turn around. Great coach who is building a solid program.
