Here is my story on Irvington’s thrilling win over Briarcliff.
Adrian Valdes hit a 3 as time expired to give Irvington a 49-47 win at Briarcliff Saturday.
The Bulldogs hits two 3s in the final 15 seconds to overcome a four-point Bears’ lead. Valdes game winner came off an inbound pass with just .5 seconds remaining and was his only field goal of the game.
“Valdes is a kid that can make shots,” Irvington coach Mike Auerbach said. “He kind of has a knack for making plays.”
Briarcliff’s Malik White hit two free throws with 15 seconds remaining to give the Bears (6-4) a 47-43 lead over Irvington (12-1).
Andrew Brennan (seven points) then carried the ball down the court and knocked down a three with 6.1 left to cut the Bears’ lead to one.
Irvington was able to foul with 5.1 left and Briarcliff missed the first of a 1-and-1.
Brennan tried a deep pass down the sideline, but the ball was deflected out of bounds. Although the horn initially sounded, the refs conferred and decided to put .5 seconds back on the clock.
The Bulldogs immediately got into a set play, and Valdes was able to get free off a screen from Mike Macchia (12 points) and hit the game winner before time expired.
“It was huge,” said Auerbach of the his team running the play without being able to call a timeout. “We’ve been on them all year about execution in everything we do.”
The experience gained from playing close games will be something that pays dividends come sectional time, according to Auerbach.
“As it turns out it was the perfect game for us to play,” Auerbach said. “We had to stay composed.”
