Still don’t think Eastchester is the Class A favorite?
Well, here’s Debbie Schechter’s story on Eastchester knocking off its second defending Class AA sectional champ in six days:
Thursday afternoon, the Eastchester boys basketball team handed another reigning sectional champion a loss.
The Eagles defeated reigning Section 9 Class AA champion Kingston 84-70 at North Rockland High School. Kingston lost to New Rochelle in last year’s state regional final.
Back on Jan. 11, the Eagles downed New Rochelle, the reigning Section 1 Class AA champ.
“I scheduled some out of conference games to be very difficult because we want to be tested going into the playoffs,” Eagles coach Fred DiCarlo said. “With games against New Rochelle and Kingston, we wanted to get that pressure on us where we are playing bigger, faster teams to see how we would react and play. To come out with the win against a team like Kingston, we’re happy where we are.”
Benny DiMirco led the way for the Eagles scoring 28 points. The sophomore didn’t get off to a great start, so DiCarlo changed his approach with DiMirco.
“We sat him for a little bit to gather himself,” DiCarlo said. “We took things slowly and told him to play within himself. He came out and made some shots in the third quarter and the confidence just went from there.”
Fifteen of DiMirco’s points came from 3-point range. The Eagles made 13 3-pointers in all.
Jack Daly had 22 points, Nick Campana added 17 and hit five 3’s. Mike Milo returned to the lineup after missing Tuesday’s win against Sleepy Hollow with an illness and scored 10.
The game was rescheduled from Jan. 4. The teams were supposed to meet at a showcase at Poughkeepsie High School, but the event was canceled because of a heating issue at the school.
