Here is my story on Rye’s 49-47 win over previously undefeated Rye Neck.
Tim DeGraw scored on a drive to the basket with 4.8 seconds left to give Rye a 49-47 win over previously undefeated Rye Neck Saturday.
DeGraw’s basket gave the Garnets only their third lead of the game. Rye held the lead at the start of the game and for one possession midway through the fourth.
Andrew Livingston (seven points) hit a 3 with just over a minute remaining to tie the game at 47. The Garnets (4-3) were then able to get a stop against the Panthers (8-1), getting the ball back with 28 seconds remaining Rye coach John Aguilar called a timeout.
“I told them I’m not drawing up a play,” said Aguilar, who only instructed his team to wait until 10 seconds remained for the last shot. “We’ve worked all preseason on how to break down a zone.”
DeGraw ended up driving to the basket and, instead of kicking it out, chose to take it to the hoop himself.
Rye Neck got a 3 off before the buzzer that just fell short. Senior Matt Franks finished with a game-high 16 points in the loss.
“Our kids really battled hard,” Aguilar said. “It was a fun game either way.”
