Here is video of my interview with Panas’ Tom Parish.
SHRUB OAK On paper, Panas’ 63-47 win at Lakeland Tuesday appears to have been anything but close.
The Hornets were hardly a pushover, though, cutting a 19-point lead in the first quarter down to as little as three by midway through the third.
Panas took a 21-2 lead in the first, sparked by Tom Parish’s 11 points, but was outscored 19-6 in the second quarter, giving the Panthers only a 27-21 halftime lead.
“I think relaxing,” said Panas’ coach Shawn Sullivan of the difference between the two quarters. “And the fact that Lakeland wasn’t going to give in. It was just a combination of them playing harder than us in that second quarter, which got them back into the game.”
Mike Morelli (19 points, three rebounds and two steals) and Jack Harrison (10 points, seven rebounds) led Lakeland (3-4) within three points of the lead midway through the third. The Panthers (7-2) answered back with a 10-3 run late in the quarter to give themselves some breathing room and a 45-36 heading into the fourth.
Panas widened its lead down the stretch, outscoring the Hornets 18-11 in the fourth to secure its first league win of the season.
“It’s always a big win to get your first league game,” said Parish, who finished with a team-high 19 points and three assists. “Of course, against Lakeland, our rival, it’s always a big win.”
Brandon Collins added 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Tim McCauley, the Panthers’ leading scorer this season who was battling flu-like symptoms Tuesday, finished with 11 points, five steals and three rebounds.
“Tim, I think every game, has been our high guy points-wise, and I’ve been a little concerned about that,” Sullivan said. “It was big that everybody else stepped up. Hopefully, over the next nine regular season games, we’ll have two or three guys step up each night.”
