Here’s Jermaine Dennis’ story on New Rochelle’s victory today over Poly Prep, followed by highlights from some of today’s other games:
Although the Huguenots (2-3) left the three-game tournament with only one victory, coach Rasaun Young is pleased with New Rochelle’s resiliency displayed on the court.
“We are going to come out of this (tournament) 1-2, but it’s going to prepare us for league play and get us ready for the playoffs,” Young said.
The lone win came against Poly Prep of Brooklyn in a 61-47 victory Monday.
Senior Derek Dorn (pictured right) had his best game in the tournament with a game-high 23 points. Dorn’s progression from the first game to the last of the tourney impressed Young and validated Young’s theory.
“He didn’t play well in the first game by getting into early foul trouble,” Young said. “I kind of chewed him out after that game and he responded very nicely for us the rest of the way.
“He was hitting his jump shots which got him going. It really impressed
Antoine Lewis added 17 points after a 20-point performance the night earlier against St. Michael’s of Toronto.
“These are the type of tournaments I always want to have them in,” Young said. “I want to challenge the young men.”
Best of the rest: Ryan Simone had 23 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks and Mahopac’s 56-48 win at Ketcham. R.J. Martinez added 17 points and five rebounds. … Kumar Nambiar had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in Mamaroneck’s 61-55 win over visiting Palisade Prep. Will Giddon had 13 points, Matt Bernstein 12 points and seven rebounds and Jack Budill nine points, seven rebounds and five assists. … Kylan Guerra had 20 points, Walter King added 19 and Naim Thomas had 18 as Stepinac snapped a five-game losing streak, beating visiting St. Raymond 85-79. Guerra hit a 3-pointer to give Stepinac a 10-point lead with 2:01 remaining. Guerra and Thomas both hit 2 of 2 at the line after St. Ray’s capitalized on two Crusader turnovers and cut the lead to four points, 81-77, with 51.7 seconds remaining.
