Here is Josh’s story on Iona Prep’s big win over St. Raymond’s.
NEW ROCHELLE Iona Prep had led all afternoon until a St. Ray’s three-point play with 3:26 remaining. Making matters worse, the Gaels had three players fouled out.
Momentum seemed to favor the Ravens — until five pivotal seconds changed it all. Matt Ryan followed a layup from fellow junior Tom Capuano by stealing the inbound pass and drilling a 3-pointer. The five-point swing was enough for the Iona Prep to prevail 69-61 Friday in a CHSAA league game.
“I think that 3 was a real game-changer,” said senior Isiah Ice, who led all scorers with 22. “It built the momentum playing in front of a packed house. We just built off of that.”
Ryan played in front of several Division I colleges, including a contingent from Stanford. The 6-foot-7 junior didn’t start after missing practice to complete a school project earlier in the week, but he came on in the second quarter and had 17 points and nine rebounds.
Ty Jerome, Qaadir Sheppard and Patrick Fleming all fouled out, but Ice and Ryan had help from Capuano. He added 13 points for the Gaels (4-2), who only trailed that once all game.
