Here’s an extended recap of Harrison beating Rye despite playing without two of its starters:
With starters Zac Evans and Joe Nannariello out injured, Harrison will be forced to overcome adversity and a challenging schedule to meet its preseason goals. To that end, the Huskies will take wins any way they can, which includes Wednesday’s 41-31 home victory over rival Rye.
Matt Stein (12 points), Coby Lefkowitz (11) and Nick Esposito (10) all reached double figures. Harrison’s defense limited Rye to just three first-quarter points.
“Defense and rebounding are the keys to our season,” said coach Gary Chiarella, whose Huskies got eight rebounds from Omar Nesheiwat. “We think we can score. It’s whether we have the toughness to rebound and defend.”
Evans, a sophomore who started as a freshman, is expected to return within the next week. Nannariello, a junior expected to provide scoring punch, hopes to return from a small fracture in his back in early January. Their team hosts a tournament next week with White Plains, Peekskill and Fox Lane and will face Pearl River, Palisade Prep and others in the future.
“The schedule’s pretty brutal,” Chiarella said. “It’s hard. But we wanted to be prepared for that first game in the playoffs and get past that.”
