With 28 Division I scholarship offers, Matt Ryan is already the area’s most coveted recruit. Frankly, it’s not even close. The 6-foot-7 swingman from Iona Prep has found himself at the center of a wild chase ever since June 15, the date schools could begin contacting the junior.
Ryan was the focus on my story that ran in today’s paper. He has drawn interest from the likes of Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Michigan and Stanford and has offers from high-majors schools just a step below.
I list some of Ryan’s most high-profile suitors in the story. You can find more here on his Rivals page.
Duke has already sent assistant Steve Wojciechowski to observe a Ryan workout. The school plans to send multiple members of its coaching staff to scout Ryan on Saturday afternoon at Xaverian.
Iona Prep will host one of the city’s top teams, Cardinal Hayes, at 4 this afternoon but Ryan won’t play. He was sick when I met him last week and now has bronchitis. The illness affected Ryan when he scored just 10 points last Friday night in a loss at home to St. Francis Prep, a team Iona beat twice last season.
For more on Ryan, check out Seth Harrison’s video below. In addition to being coveted for his jumpshot, Ryan is an “A” student. You can have a peek at his smooth stroke and how he’s just plain smooth here:
