With our leader “Mr. Clean” not submitting picks for last week, defending champ “Prince” has now surged into the lead with two weeks to go. It’s a slim margin—just one ahead of “Voice of the Panthers” and “The Champ is Here.” Prince was also in an eight-way tie for first place in Week 8 with a 10-2 record.
The picks’ contest ends next week with a limited slate, so this could be the final week to make a difference.
Top 10: 48-34 (7-5 last week)
Overall: 235-68 (27-8 last week)
Note: I’m going to keep my synopsis short for the top games because I’ve already previewed this week’s six playoff contests.
TOP 10 (plus one)—Friday:
Class A semifnal, 7 p.m. at Ossining: Somers 28, Ossining 21. Something tells me Ossining will have a chance at some point in the fourth quarter, but I think Somers is strong enough defensively to get that key stop or turnover late to seal it.
Class A semifinal, 7:15 p.m. at Rye: Rye 35, Tappan Zee 21. Don’t discount this fact: This is the biggest game TZ has played in over two decades. The Dutchmen will be ready to play. They should also have success running right at Rye, but can they stop the Garnets’ big-play offense?
Class A consolation bowl, 7 p.m. at John Jay: Panas 37, John Jay 27. It’s not the playoff win it wanted, but Panas’ strong senior class has plenty of fire for one last game together.
Class AA semifinal, 2 p.m. at Ketcham: Ketcham 20, North Rockland 7. The turnover-prone Raiders may be strong defensively, but that’s not enough to overcome their propensity to turn the ball over against an opponent this good.
Class B consolation bowl, 2 p.m. at Nanuet: Nanuet 13, Ardsley 7. This could be a physical slugfest—and one of the biggest coin flips of the day. Can Ardsley regroup off last week’s crushing loss to Lourdes?
Class AA consolation bowl, 2:30 p.m. at New Rochelle: New Rochelle 14, Clarkstown South 7. This is New Ro’s first bowl game since 2005, but this year’s team is young and remains hungry. I expect the Huguenots to finish on a high note in another close, quality loss for South, which has suffered its share.
Class A consolation bowl, 2:30 p.m. at Sleepy: Yorktown 41, Sleepy Hollow 28. Expect offense to dominate, regardless of who is in the lineup. Yorktown just has more options to turn to.
Class AA consolation bowl, 3 p.m. at Scarsdale: Scarsdale 23, Ramapo 7. The Raiders have been outstanding defensively and Ramapo struggles to put points on the board against quality opponents. At home to boot, everything seems to favor Scarsdale.
Class C championship, 3:30 p.m. at Mahopac: Rye Neck 33, Woodlands 20. Rye Neck’s balance and depth reigns supreme in this championship rematch. Also, you have to figure Woodlands won’t recover two onside kicks and throw a halfback pass for a TD this time.
Class AA semifinal, 6 p.m. at John Jay: White Plains 28, John Jay 17. I’m going to stick by my pre-tourney prediction. Let’s say White Plains spreads out the Patriots and has success moving the ball. If that bears true, I don’t know that John Jay can keep up in a shootout.
Class B championship, 7 p.m. at Mahopac: Lourdes 14, Pleasantville 6. I would’ve picked Pleasantville before the injury to James Leyden, who was so integral in the outcome two weeks ago. Expect the Panthers to rally around Leyden if he’s, in fact, out, but how can you essentially replace a three-way starter? I’m also impressed with Lourdes ability to close strong late this season. The Warriors simply don’t fade; they keep pushing.
