Our news department has a story on Ramapo coach Duff Pannell, who has been arrested and accused of striking a 15-year-old player in the head with a football helmet during practice on Monday.
The 43-year-old Pannell was hired in late June as the Ramapo coach after serving as the school’s athletic coordinator last school year. He has led the Gryphons to a 4-3 record, including the program’s first Class AA playoff berth since 2008. Ramapo capped its regular season last Friday with a 21-18 win over district rival Spring Valley.
Ramapo fired former coach Dan Zotter last December. Pannell was first interviewed in April, but was not hired until over two months later as East Ramapo waited for its budget to pass. In the interim, Pannell helped organize workouts to keep the football team engaged as players awaited word on whether they would have football or not in 2013.
