“Mr. Clean” and “Prince” were both dominant in Week 3, going an impressive 9-1. However, Prince’s Harrison pick came in too late, so he is only credited for eight correct picks.
“Mr. Clean” pulled into a tie for first in the overall contest with “Panasonic.” They are 22-8. I’m with a bunch of others four back. Still, plenty of us close to the top, so let’s look to Week 4 for a chance to make up that ground…
Josh’s picks —
Top 10: 18-12 (6-4 last week)
Overall: 86-26 (28-8 last week)
THE TOP 10 —
GAMES OF THE WEEK
Rye (3-0) vs. Ossining (3-0)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Where: Rye High School
Key players: Rye — Andrew Livingston (6-1, 170), Jr., QB; Chris Santangelo (5-10, 170), Sr., WR/DB; Shane O’Malley (5-9, 170), Sr., RB/LB. Ossining — Justin Davidov (5-11, 180), Sr., QB; James Johnson (5-11, 160), Sr., WR/DB; Solomon White (5-7, 160), Sr., RB/DB/KR.
Key matchup: Containment of Rye’s defensive front on Davidov
Outlook: The quarterbacks will grab plenty of attention heading into this matchup of unbeatens and for good reason. Both Livingston and Davidov were named Super 11 in the preseason and have somehow exceeded the hype. They have combined to throw for 18 touchdowns already. Livingston can run, but he’s more of a traditional pocket passer. Ossining will need to be strong in pass defense. Rye’s job is more complicated. Davidov had thrown for 695 yards, but he also leads the team with 444 yards rushing. The Garnets will need to limit one of those dimensions to simplify things. Their defense is quick and could be capable of doing just that. Either way, expect a high-scoring game. Ossining is second in Section 1 with 133 points. Despite a game against defending champ Somers, Rye still averages 31 points per game.
Prediction: Rye 41, Ossining 34. This will be fun, but Rye appears to be a little strong on D.
Lakeland (2-1) vs. Panas (2-1)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Where: Lakeland High School
Key players: Lakeland — Anthony Capozzi (5-8, 155), Jr., RB/DB/KR; Brian Prunty, Sr. (6-3, 195), QB/DB; Greg Lenane (5-8, 170), Sr., WR/DB. Panas — Trey Hodge (6-2, 165), Sr., WR/DB; John Brophy (5-11, 190), Sr., RB/LB; Tim McCauley (5-10, 190), Sr., WR/DB.
Key matchup: Lakeland ball-control running game vs. Panas front seven.
Outlook: Lakeland will play the game without senior running back Jimmy Flaherty, who rushed for over 1,200 yards in just eight games as a junior. He suffered a separated shoulder in Week 2 and is expected to miss another few weeks. His bruising running helped set up the electric Capozzi and provide room for the passing game. Lakeland will now have to try to establish that rhythm against a defense that shut out Brewster in Week 2 and picked off six Pearl River passes in Week 3. Although it’s early, the winner will put itself in good position to secure a playoff berth.
Prediction: Panas 24, Lakeland 20. The Hornets still have some playmakers, but they will miss Flahery against a hard-nosed team like Panas.
John Jay 17, Ramapo 6. Ramapo has been great the last 10 quarters, allowing just 14 points. This is a potential upset, but John Jay should have enough to win.
Sleepy Hollow 20, Nyack 12. With so many injuries, I don’t know that Nyack is in position to win. The potential return of speedster Trevor Gordon could help though.
Yorktown 27, Tappan Zee 19. This should be close one way or the other. Did Harrison provide a blueprint on how to slow down the Single-Wing?
Ketcham 33, White Plains 20. Can White Plains maintain its momentum? Either way, it’s pass defense will need to be better against Ketcham.
Harrison 35, Horace Greeley 14. Harrison will have another Ciero to deal with (Cameron), but this is a step up in competition for the young Quakers.
North Rockland 20, Arlington 10. Highly unlikely the Red Raiders lose two games at home to Dutchess schools in the same season.
Dobbs Ferry 19, Bronxville 14. This will really help clear up the Class C picture. Can Bronxville stop Dobbs the way it stopped Woodlands?
Pleasantville 13, Briarcliff/Hamilton 7: Points will be at a premium, so a big turnover could swing the outcome in this rivalry game.
Albertus Magnus 33, Valhalla 14
Clarkstown South 13, Carmel 7
