So last night, a Friday in the heart of football season, me, the wife and Miss Varsity Insider went out for Mexican. Today, a football Saturday, I am playing golf smack in the middle of the afternoon. Yeah, not your typical September weekend. (Now I know how Mike Oliva feels.)
Anyway, while I’m enjoying my last Saturday off until December, there will be two football games today, but both are on the road. Stepinac aims to improve to 2-0 at Xavier and Iona Prep looks to bounce back against last year’s adversary, defending CHSFL AAA champ Chaminade.
I’ll have some updates on @lohudinsider and will post recaps afterward on the blog. Check back later for more and, if you’re having a quiet Saturday of your own, enjoy.
Saturday’s games —
Stepinac 41, Xavier 3
Chaminade 22, Iona Prep 7
Stepinac 41, Xavier 3: Malcolm Major rushed for 85 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries as Stepinac cruised to a 41-3 win at Xavier.
Crusaders quarterback Brandon Coleman was 13 of 14 through the air for 198 yards and two touchdowns. Coleman also rushed for 32 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.
Major put Stepinac on the board in the first quarter with a 58-yard run, his longest of the day.
After a Xavier field goal, Coleman hit Jerry Thompson on a 20-yard pass to put the Crusaders up 14-3. Mathew Tierney converted the extra point.
Major rushed for another touchdown, this one from 2 yards out, before halftime to put the Crusaders up 21-3.
Coleman and Major each added another touchdown on the ground followed by a 29-yard touchdown pass from Coleman to Osaze Perry-Porter.
