“Mr. Clean,” “aces wild,” “Joey D,” “Loudmouth,” “DutchessFBFan,” “The Champ is Here,” and “StepIn__” both picked eight games correct in Week 1 to pull into the early lead. I picked seven right and am part of a 12-way tie for eighth. All of the results are listed after my picks. (I have updated them to include the 30 people I had omitted from the original results by mistake. My bad.)
The games may be in jeopardy on Thursday because of inclement weather, so that’s something to keep an eye on tomorrow. Until then, don’t forget to log in tonight for our live chat at 7:30 p.m. We can look back at Week 1, look ahead to Week 2, or…you can just tell me how dumb I am for picking “Team Y” over “Team X.”
Anyway, can’t wait to talk tonight. I’m excited about Week 2. In fact, let’s get to the picks…
Top 10: 7-3
THE TOP 10—
GAMES OF THE WEEK
New Rochelle vs. Mahopac
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Where: City Park, New Rochelle
Key players: New Rochelle — Jonathan Forrest (5-11, 203), Jr., RB/LB; Corey Holder (6-2, 210), Jr., OL/DL; Tajmir Anderson (5-8, 160), Sr., DB. Mahopac — Ryan Simone (6-4, 220), Sr., TE/DE; Ethan Ryan (6-1, 180), Sr., QB; Eric Giorno (5-11, 180), Sr., RB/LB.
Key matchup: New Rochelle offensive line vs. Mahopac defensive front.
Outlook: No Section 1 team played New Rochelle tougher last year than Mahopac. Although the Indians failed to qualify for the playoffs, their defensive held the eventual Class AA state champ scoreless. The only points in a 6-0 New Rochelle win came on a kick return. Mahopac expects to be even better this season and will be led by a quick defense and a more balanced offense steered by Ryan. The Indians shut out Scarsdale 28-0 in Week 1 and now have a chance to drop New Rochelle to a rare 0-2 start. The Huguenots, with 18 new starters, lost their opener 22-14 at Ketcham. They’ll need to block a strong Mahopac defensive front in order to give offensive playmakers room to operate.
Prediction: Mahopac 14, New Rochelle 7. I’d be surprised if either team reaches the 20s. In fact, if one of them does, that team will almost definitely win. New Ro has a lot of pride and will play better. In fact, the Huguenots started playing better as of halftime in Week 1. The truth is, although there are a lot of teams they’d beat this week, I don’t think Mahopac is one of them.
Somers vs. Rye
When: Sunday, 3:30 p.m.
Where: Somers High School
Key players: Somers — Tim Cousin (5-10, 160), Sr., QB; Matt Morgante, (5-10, 170), Jr., RB/DB; Connor Vlasaty (5-8, 170), Sr., RB/DB. Rye — Andrew Livingston (6-1, 170), Jr., QB; Chris Santangelo (5-10, 170), Sr., WR/DB; Shane O’Malley (5-9, 170), Sr., RB/LB.
Key matchup: Somers pass defense vs. Rye passing game.
Outlook: Both teams looked impressive in their season openers. Somers controlled the game throughout on the road at Poughkeepsie despite breaking almost an entirely new team. The Tuskers are smaller up front than during last year’s section title run, but they still were strong at the point of attack. They’ll face a different test this week in Rye. Livingston threw for 347 yards and four touchdowns in a rout of Spring Valley as the Garnets showcased their wide-open offense. They’ll face a tougher challenge in Somers and will need to prove they can provide time to reproduce those type of numbers against a quality opponent.
Prediction: Rye 28, Somers 17. As Tony DeMatteo said, you can’t judge Somers by last week, a game it played against a team that couldn’t possibly have been ready. Rye will test the Tuskers in multiple ways, and I think the Garnets’ dynamic offense will be too much.
Sleepy Hollow 27, Poughkeepsie 13. If Poughkeepsie had trouble stopping Somers, Sleepy should offer similar trouble. The Pioneers will have to play more physical to win.
North Rockland 28, Mamaroneck 14. Two years ago the Red Raiders lost their season opener at home in OT. They won the rest. Could this be the start of something similar?
Brewster 27, Panas 20. I really liked what I saw from Brewster last week, and I still think both teams will be in the playoff mix.
Lakeland 28, Eastchester 20. With Mike Marsico probably still out, Lakeland should win. The Flaherty-Cappozzi backfield duo is one of Class A’s best—and it’s most underrated.
Yorktown 35, John Jay 21. The Indians had Ryan Lee back at QB and Etnik Rraci in the lineup last week. That changes things, but Yorktown has more depth to survive a physical game between rivals.
Tappan Zee 28, Horace Greeley 21. I’ve heard some buzz about Greeley having improved, but it’s too early to judge, especially off a win over Riverside. TZ is a safer pick.
Pleasantville 20, Putnam Valley 14. Maybe the toughest game to pick this week. If Lourdes is truly a strong Class B favorite, Put Valley might be the pick. We’ll see. But Pleasantville will be tough on D against the explosive Tigers.
Croton-Harmon 21, Nanuet 13. These two teams lost key games in Week 1. With only four playoff spots, this could be a huge game in Class B.
Ardsley 20, Edgemont 12
Ossining 34, Spring Valley 13
Rye Neck 20, Pawling 0
Port Chester 22, Yonkers 7
Ramapo 19, Clarkstown South 14
Woodlands 44, Haldane 13
Beacon 33, Hen Hud 10
Yonkers Montessori 22, Blind Brook 13
Ketcham 35, Scarsdale 14
Gorton 41, Riverside 6
Saunders 27, Peekskill 12
Bronxville 21, Tuckahoe 13
Westlake 26, Early College 7
Harrison 38, Pearl River 10
Pelham 19, Lincoln 13
White Plains 28, Suffern 13
Hastings 12, Valhalla 7
John Jay-EF 24, Carmel 7
Clarkstown North 21, Mount Vernon 8
Hackley 33, Briarcliff/Hamilton 7
Stepinac 38, Xavier 13
Chaminade 27, Iona Prep 14
St. Peter’s 26, Kennedy 13
Dobbs Ferry 33, Albertus Magnus 12
Our Lady of Lourdes 27, Irvington 17
Arlington 21, Fox Lane 7
Nyack 27, Byram Hills 14
