If you’ve followed me on Twitter or Instagram these last few months, you’ve probably seen my updates on the progress at Iona Prep, where the school is busy installing new turf on its football field. The project is scheduled to be complete by the beginning of the fall season on Sept. 4. The football field won’t play there until more than two weeks later when it hosts Holy Cross at 6 on Saturday night, Sept. 21, in its third game of the season.
The current project is designed to complete the turf only, but the full plans also call for the installation of bleachers and lights. There is no exact date for that phase of the project, but it could be more challenging to secure the funding and permits for those additions, according to Iona Prep AD Bernie Mahoney. The school is located in a residential neighborhood, which can always complicate the addition of lights to a field.
Iona Prep isn’t the only local school adding or revamping its turf this fall.
• Haldane is currently in construction on a new turf field.
• Yorktown had construction on its Charlie Murphy Field complete last school year, but the football team played all of its home games at Panas. The ‘Huskers were practicing on the new turf when I visited Tuesday. The field has long been used as a neutral site for various Section 1 playoff games and now it finally has a press box.
• Dobbs Ferry had Gould Park redone, although the surface is still grass and dirt.
• Briarcliff/Hamilton will play home games at Purchase College while Briarcliff has a new turf field constructed. It won’t be ready for football until next season.
