Pearl River senior Kevin Degnan made two bits of news Sunday. He committed to Fairfield, joining Eric Paschall as the only Division I basketball commits from the Class of 2014. But, in doing so, he all but assured he will be the first basketball player from Pearl River to play Division I ball since his coach, Jerry Houston Jr., at Iona in 1991-93.
The interesting thing about Houston Jr. and his older brother Kevin Houston is that neither were scholarship players. Yes, the elder Houston led the country in scoring as a senior, but he played at West Point. So Degnan is Pearl River’s first Division I player since???
I’ll try to find out that answer. In the meantime, I did talk to Degnan today. The 6-foot-8 forward had narrowed his list of suitors down to a final five: Fairfield, Fordham, Quinnipiac, Vermont and Siena. He had scheduled visits to Fairfield and Fordham for September and originally planned to make his college decision at some point later next month. But Degnan decided Fairfield had everything he wanted, so he gave the school his verbal commitment on Sunday.
I’ll have more from my story on Degnan later tonight.
UPDATE, 11:25 a.m.: Here’s the full story, with comments from Degnan and his coach.
