R.J. Martinez transferred this summer from Carmel to rival Mahopac. He earned a spot on Hudson Valley’s team at the BCANY Summer Hoops Festival, joining a crowded backcourt that already included returning players Jack Daly of Eastchester and Mike DeMello of White Plains, both of who thrived during the team’s run to a gold medal last summer.
In his BCANY debut, Martinez (pictured right) did more than his part. He starred, dropping 20 points to go with five rebounds, four assists and six steals in a 97-43 drubbing of Rochester tonight in Johnson City.
Hudson Valley dominated throughout behind a balanced scoring effort and a whopping 20 steals.
Pearl River’s Kevin Degnan chipped in 13 points and three rebounds. Tappan Zee’s Luke McLoughlin — one of three juniors on the team — had 12 points to go with six rebounds and five steals.
DeMello (11 points) and Mahopac’s Ryan Simone (10) joined them in double figures. DeMello dished out a team-best seven assists. Spring Valley’s Rickey McGill (nine points), Rye Neck’s Matt Franks, Palisade Prep’s Isaiah Ward and Harrison’s Coby Lefkowitz (six apiece) and Daly (four) rounded out the scoring.
Hudson Valley returns to the court Saturday morning at 10:30 against Suffolk. It is also scheduled to meet Buffalo at 2:30 Saturday afternoon.
