A quick break from football and basketball, if you’ll allow. Here’s a link to today’s Sunday feature on Iona Prep grad Colin Moran, the No. 6 pick in this year’s MLB Draft.
Moran, an All-American third baseman at North Carolina, is the highest local draft pick since his uncle, B.J. Surhoff, a former multi-sport star at Rye High School, went first overall in 1985. I spent some time with the Iona Prep grad last week at the College World Series in Omaha. As you can tell by reading the story, he is about as low key as an elite athlete gets.
The Moran package will launch a series as we follow his progress from North Carolina to, in all likelihood, the big leagues. Moran has yet to sign with the Miami Marlins but is expected to earn a signing bonus in excess of $3 million. He was also considered one of the more developed prospects in this year’s draft.
One thing you’ll note from the story is that it includes four videos: interviews with Moran, his parents and his teammates and footage of Moran hitting. Although not all stories will necessarily be this in-depth, you can expect to see video utilized in a similar fashion much more often on this blog, something (I hope you noticed) that has been integrated already this week.
Anyway, give the story a read if you have a chance. I have a feeling you’ll hear plenty more about Colin in the coming years. Might be worth a few minutes to get to know what he’s all about.
