An important day for local sports, folks: Five districts will hold school budget votes on Tuesday, East Ramapo and Mount Vernon most notably.
You’re probably all privy to the trials and tribulations in recent years in Mount Vernon. With some financial assistance from Denzel Washington and other past and present members of the community, Mount Vernon saved sports at the last minute in Aug. 2008. The district faces austerity again.
The situation in East Ramapo has received even more attention because of widespread acrimony within the community. Sports at Spring Valley and Ramapo High Schools have already been stripped to the bare bones. The schools now face the extinction of their remaining varsity teams; it would be devastating for the communities and the tight-knit Rockland County sports community as a whole. Rockland sports simply wouldn’t be the same without Spring Valley and Ramapo. It’s undeniable.
The districts vote on their future today. This editorial from LoHud.com outlines both schools’ situations well, so I suggest you give it a read and encourage any friends and family in those districts to do something elemental: Vote.
