The NFL Draft begins tonight at Radio City Music Hall and continues Friday and Saturday. Although there are no Jimmy Kennedys or Devin McCourtys slated to go early, two local players have put themselves in position to get picked this weekend. And it wasn’t easy.
Our friend Dan did a great job on the preview. He wrote separate feature stories on North Rockland’s Brandon Hepburn and Saunders’ Gilbert Pena.
Hepburn is a linebacker from Florida A&M who is expected to be a late-round pick or a free agent. He led Florida A&M in several defensive categories as a senior after playing sparingly early in his career.
The 6-foot-4, 317-pound Pena is an interesting case as well. He is 26 and took four season off from football to work and spend time with his family, including his mother Susan Cruz, who had cancer. Pena eventually surfaced at ASA in Brooklyn and earned a scholarship at Ole Miss, where he earned playing time at defensive tackle as a junior and senior.
