The last of 20 boys regional finals will be played at 1 this afternoon when New Rochelle and Kingston get together in West Point. The other 19 trips to Glens Falls have been booked.
I’ll be back soon with a scouting report on the game. It’s an important one for the area as New Ro tries to — for lack of a better term — defend Section 1’s honor. This area has produced more NYSPHSAA boys basketball state champs than any other section, but this season could be one of the bleakest on record. Section 1 has failed to produce a finalist only seven times since 1978 when state tournament play began in its current format (‘83, ‘84, ‘86, ‘92, ‘98, ‘08, ‘10).
MLK’s win on Friday prevented even more potential ignominy. Only twice has Section 1 failed to send a team to the state final four: 1983 and 1986. Not only did the Tigers extend the season, New Rochelle can double Section 1 representation with a win today.
Anyway, more on New Ro-Kingston later. Here’s a look at the final four schedule at the Glens Falls Civic Center — minus the one team, of course:
