The Westchester County chapter of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) will honor the Mount Vernon boys basketball team and head coach and athletic director Bob Cimmino with the 11th annual Dennis T. Hurlie Sportsmanship Award.
The two-time defending Class AA state and seven-time defending Section 1 champs will be feted with a halftime ceremony during next Friday’s Class AA semifinal between Mahopac and New Rochelle at the County Center. Mount Vernon, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, will play No. 2 North Rockland at 6:45 that same night.
Here’s part of the IAABO’s release that explains the purpose of the award:
This award goes to a high school boys varsity basketball team and head coach in Westchester County that has demonstrated hard work, fair play, cohesiveness, team spirit and sportsmanship. It is with great pleasure that Mount Vernon High School and head coach Bob Cimmino be selected for this prestigious award.
In 2002, the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials Westchester County Board 52 decided to create a sportsmanship award in honor of Dennis Hurlie, who is a former president of the board, a dedicated member for over 37 years and a very familiar sight here at Westchester County Center while officiating Section 1 tournament games for boys basketball. He exemplified the ideals of the association by promoting the respect for the game, maintaining the highest standards of basketball officiating and, most importantly, encouraging the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship.

THAT MY FRIENDS IS WHY I’M PROUD TO HAVE GONE TO MOUNT VERNON HIGH SCHOOL ,CONGRATS
Mount Vernon boys deserve it!!
The Mount Vernon school/community over the last half century has built a basketball dynasty which rests upon the foundation of sportsmanship, respect for the game, fair play and commitment to excellence. Hence, a most worthy recipient of the Hurlie Sportsmanship Award.
And though it has been stated many times before, Coach Cimmino at the helm of this great program deserves all the accolades for guiding his players, past and present, in this righteous direction.
This day in particular and every day in general, I am so proud to be a Mount Vernon alum…Class of ‘65.
Well deserved! Congrats
oh how quickly we forget about the early nineties team that had two players with criminal records and an average gpa of about 1 pt 2 u love to drink the mv koolaid
great news, and some on this blog scratch their heads on why some of us old men are so passionate about this program.
65, check out the Gus story on the other thread
dd,
None of the kids on the current team were even alive then. Program has grown leaps and bounds. Time to snap back into current reality.
and the hits just keep on coming! very prestigious award, CONGRATULATIONS.
dd,
thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Shows dd has no idea who these kids are. I’ve had the honor of watching them since Ben Gordon graduated. And they have always been nice and respectful kids!! When they travel around the country people have nothing but good things to say about those kids. But this world would be way to perfect without people trying to spread hate like DD. gotta love those haters!!! Great job mount vernon
I am starting my all Westchester County team from the last 40 years, I am starting with Elton Brand, help me fill out my team – all Westchester!
dd,
ditto on what spacecadet said
.....just another passing dark cloud on an otherwise gloriously sunny day.
p.s. I’ll have the Cheery Cherry Koolaid, please!
Coach B,
The Journal American article I was referring to last night compiled their All-Century Team. It included;
Gus Williams
Earl Tatum
Bernard Toone
Scooter McCray
Elton Brand
Bench players [aka 2nd/3rd team notables]
Rodney McCray
Clyde Vaughan
Marty Conlon
Ray Williams
Charlie Criss [@ 47 yrs. graduated technically he’s outside your 40 window]
Josh, or Haywood or anyone for that matter being that this is black history month it got me thinking. Has there ever been a section 1 semifinal or final with two african american head coaches in it? Or is New Ro vs. Pac next week history in the making? I have not been around the section long enough to know but it got me thinking. Has any african american coach had success like Downes the past several years or like Crabby this year and most definitely the success he will have in the future. i know Coach Murphy won the section at PK but can’t think of any other.
I was going to say Laffin vs Mayfield but I forgot Laffin is white chocolate, lol.
Super,
Murph won the State too. God bless him for that lonely banner in the gym.
Bernard “Looney” Toone from Gorton High School and then to Marquette University (was on Al McGuire’s National Championship Team).
The last I remember about him, was that he had been in trouble with the law many years ago.
SUPERFAN,
I HAVE KNOW IDEA
I was a student athlete at MVHS from 1971 – 1975. It was quite a thrill as a freshman to have Earl Tatum as a fellow classmate. I have been watching MVHS boys basketball ever since. I also had the opportunity to make all the trips up to Glens Falls starting in 1980 with the big three, Donald, Ricky and Curtis! The continuous level of success of this program is a lasting tribute to the parents, players and the coaching staff led by Bob Cimmino. I also had the pleasure of knowing and playing sports with both Bob and Denis Hurlie. In my opinion, you could not find two more deserving individuals than these two dedicated and decent human beings. One to have an award named after him and the other to receive this award is quite appropriate.
LOVE THE STORIES KEEP THEM COMMING
Watching the Vern get run out of the gym by Loughlin earlier in the year. I think they are in trouble this week
superfan… Good Q. Murphy also won at Woodlands in 2010, but that was against Pleasantville.
Obviously, Willie Worsley and Spencer Mayfield have also had success recently. I’d have to look at the archives, but I would think it has happened.
superfan… I haven’t found much, but it has happened. Spencer Mayfield (White Plains) vs. Nat Harris (New Rochelle) in the 1995 Class A final.
Coach Jim Bostic had some success back in the 80’s. Good coach and even better player.
Since we’re going back memory lane… How about those Newburgh teams when they played at the Center. Terry “LD” Williams (smu)and Kevin “Butch” Moore(smu) always gave Mount Vernon a run for its money. Also how about when Jim Runcie (Holy Cross)from FDR came down and put on a show!
Guys,
Congrats on the MV Dynasty…well earned to do it again & Again…Niceee. A big tribute to the Program!!!
I heard a rumor that MTV is scrimmaging Stepinac on Sunday at 2:00? Anyone know if this is true or just BS.
Not true. Stepinac is hosting Eastchester.
Well at least Eastchester will play Stepinac? Positive sign I guess.
Maybe MV will follow the lead and play local competitive teams like Iona and Stepinac?
at this point there is nothing to prove and the sole purpose of a scrimmage would be to run your plays and work on defensive traps. Any team trying to go head to head with another powerhouse team would be just a sign of coaches ego’s getting in the way. You can have a AA team play a team from class A, and everyone can benefit except the bloggers who still need to satisfy their urge. I have seen MV scrimmage some great teams at this point of the year, and its just a practice with a couple of Ref’s…
Josh,
Thanks for clarifying that..half true, the scrimmage part..at least I will get to see that kid Daly play..Also heard a rumor that Iona Perp is scrimmaging Ursline? Any truth to this one?
Statesman or anyone,
Was Elton Brand on Peekskill the year that Poughkeepsie won the Section and the State?
Po Fan’
I want to say yes but ‘95 may have been too early. They year they beat Elton they actually lost to Panas in the chip in a nightmarish gsme.
