Weather has already forced the postponement of most of Friday’s games and some on Saturday. A few games scheduled for the weekend were moved up to tonight, packing the schedule.

Not surprisingly, a lot happened. Tyler Fernandez, a Rye Country Day player and Mount Vernon resident, accomplished two very rare achievements at once. He scored his 1,000th point as a junior AND he reached the milestone despite basketball not being his primary sport. Fernandez, who intends to pitch in college, netted No. 1,000 tonight at Brunswick during a 26-point game. He had no idea that he was closing in on the number. In fact, his father, Tyler Sr., who used to coach with Drew Watson at Hamilton, wanted to surprise his son. Boy, did it work.

In other news, Spring Valley clinched the League 4-A title tonight with an impressive win over Clarkstown North. Ironically, North is the very team that opened the door for the Tigers when it beat North Rockland 24 hours ago.

Putnam Valley also posted an impressive win over Bronxville the night after it clinched a league title. You also had Panas and Peekskill winning to clinch a share of their league title with one another.

The best finish belonged to Croton, which was able to hold off a hungry Westlake team in OT. The Wildcats still haven’t qualified for the Class B playoffs, but Ian Thom really hurt their chances with his buzzer beater tonight.

Rye Country Day 57, Brunswick 53: At Brunswick, Tyler Fernandez surpassed the 1,000-point mark midway through the second half and finished the game with 1,006 points. “Going into to the game I had no idea that I was that close,” Fernandez said. “I was surprised when I found out.”

“Not a lot people can get to this point and it’s exciting to be here,” said Fernandez, a junior guard. “I’m just glad that we got the win tonight.”
