Feb. 4: James, Daly earn #POTW honors after erupting vs. league foes

You know the drill by now: Every week, Dan and I each pick a Player of the Week based on the previous seven days. You can tweet us your suggestions and nominate players for the honor @LoHudInsider [2] and @LoHud_DeFran [3], hashtag #POTW.

As you can see, all seven days counted toward this week’s picks…

Josh’s POTW: Josh James, Stepinac —

The 6-foot-1 senior had a good, solid start to the week, scoring 21 points in a closer-than-expected game against Fordham Prep with both starting guards, Walter King and Naim Thomas, out. He then chipped in 16 points Saturday in a win at Mount St. Michael, a team that beat Stepinac earlier this season and had bedeviled the Crusaders in recent years.

But the #POTW timeline is a full seven days and James needed all seven to earn these honors for the second time this season. And, boy, did he earn them. The Monmouth-bound guard delivered perhaps the performance of the year in local basketball on Super Sunday. He had a career-high 34 points on near-perfect shooting (11 for 13 FG, 9 for 13 FT) and added nine rebounds and eight assists. Stepinac built its lead as high as 20 points and went on to beat St. Ray’s — another team it lost to earlier this season — 83-68.

That’s #POTW stuff.

[4]Dan’s POTW: Jack Daly, Eastchester —

Daly might have only played in one complete game last week, but he did not disappoint. He dropped in 30 points for the Eagles as they topped Pelham 62-51 for their first league title since 2008. Daly has put up huge numbers all year, so it is only fitting that in the game to clinch their first league championship in five years was one that he came up huge in.

While the Eagles were able to pick up another win Saturday against Bronxville, it was without Daly in the second half after sitting out with an ankle injury. Daly, who is questionable for today’s game against Scarsdale, will need to recover quickly if Eastchester has any hopes of making some noise come playoff time.
