I saw two excellent basketball games tonight that came down to the final minute. Peekskill closed strong to win at Panas, earning revenge from its loss at home earlier this month. Putnam Valley also shook off the rust from a 13-day layoff just in time, outscoring Pleasantville 14-2 in the fourth quarter to win. The Panthers had a shot to tie it just before the buzzer that rimmed out.
Still, the story of the night was Briarcliff senior Brian Daniels, who not only scored his 1,000th career point but made it a night to remember for more reasons than one. Daniels netted No. 1,000 on a basket late in the third quarter and made his biggest play in the fourth. His and-1 put the Bears ahead with just 17 seconds to play and capped a 23-point night.
Dan just posted his story about Peekskill-Panas. You can read my tweets from both that game and Pleasantville-Putnam Valley, which I think was a significant win for the Tigers. Pleasantville is the more experienced team and has played a much tougher schedule. It came into tonight ready to take off, but that was thwarted by Putnam Valley’s strong finish. The Tigers began to dictate the game late and were excellent defensively. They did enough to win on an otherwise off night. That’s how you win in the playoffs.
