a few years ago iona beat the hell out of stepinac and would have beaten mv, if mv didn’t duck and run and avoid local comp and the slam dunk tourny to go to places like ,erie pa (what?)?
cimmino is the master ducker. never will challenge any local catholic teams. fear is a powerful motivator to duck and run! he does a masterful job of the duck and run. why wouldn’t anyone want to see mv play iona or stepinac this season?
it may be a fear he retains from not ever making the basketball team at mount saint michael when he tried out in the 70’s and was routinely cut from the squad every season from frosh to varsity ? (all groupies please look it up or ask him).
but you guys seem to know a lot more than i do so i will defer to your self acknowledged hs basketball intelligence …........... hahahaha

Queens NY, IS8. Three sessions a year. Bring your sorry team out there where the real men play. It’s 350 bucks. You will come limping home my brother and the kids will be trying out for the Crew team or wishing they were back in class A.. You bring up how great a team Iona had a few years ago, spare us.

iona,
You don’t know what you’re talking about. Iona did have a good team a few years ago with Voelkel, but there’s no way you could say they ‘definitely’ would have beat MV. Thats not how basketball works. That Iona team lost to Peekskill and Xavier I believe – clearly on a bad day, MV would beat them. I believe that Iona team beat St Rays, so it is possible on a good day they could’ve beat MV, but all you could say is it could be a close game. Which is just what most fans are saying this year about Stepinac and MV. I actually think Iona may have been better the year before with Pope and Lyde as Srs, Voelkel and co. as Jrs.

spacecadet,
As I remember, MV cut that huge Loughlin lead from 16 or 18 to 5pts in the 2nd quarter. But then Loughlin controlled the entire second half. A little different than a 5 point game with 3 mins to go in the 4th.
States and Space,
As far as Martin, I think he’s an excellent player, no doubt about it. However, watching the MV/Loughlin game, Loughlin didn’t win it on the interior, they won it with guard play – Carrington and Williams and in transition. Loughlin’s ball pressure really got to MV. That game was played a very high speed up and down the court – that was not a half court game to work the ball into Martin or any other big man. Even if Martin was on the court, I’m just not sure it would change the tempo at all. MV got beat because their guards couldn’t match up with Carrington and Williams. Martin being on the court doesn’t change the backcourt situation. We’re also forgetting Loughlin has a massive 6’9” 300lb kid in the middle who can play – its not like Martin would’ve been able to physically dominate the paint. What MV needs to match up better with Loughlin isn’t another interior player, they need a Sherrod Wright-type player on the wing to Loughlin’s wings. From everything I’ve heard about the Stepinac/Loughlin game, Stepinac’s guards Naim Thomas, Walter King and Josh James went head to head with Loughlin’s guards and held their own – that was why the Stepinac/Loughlin game was close.

hoops,
yes, they did get hurt from the outside in that game and Loughlin shot lights out. I believe MV will benifit in a close game because these kids play together all year long, and of course a slight edge has to go to Cimmino when the pressure is on. Now we never really had that chance and maybe the only reason they got close was because of Josh Doughty’s 35 footers off the glass to make the run. The problem in that game was MV had to put guys on the floor to make up for Brandon who at that time were not ready for prime time. The result was at least a half dozen missed lay-ups and a lot of unforced turnovers in the first quarter. My point, keep the game close against Loughlin and MV has a pretty good shot.

Space,
I would absolutely agree with you that in a close game, I like MV’s chances. However, I just don’t see it being that close. And this is not a knock on MV at all – I think MV is a very good team this year. Loughlin is just loaded and MV doesn’t match up with them on the wings. And Loughlin is loaded where MV is weakest – the wing. MV simply cannot matchup with Carrington and Williams. You say Loughlin shot lights out, but they didn’t do anything differently than a regular game – Williams is a big time shooter and scorer, so in Carrington. I actually thought Carrington was off a bit from long range against MV.
You mentioned MVs players missing layups and committing TOs early in the game – that’s true. But that’s a result of an up and down frenetic pace game, that’s also a result of loughlin being a long team that applied a lot of pressure to the ball against MV and Loughlin having a 6’9” starting C and a 6’11” kid off the bench affecting shots.
I do agree though, that if MV could keep it close I like Cimmino’s ability in a close game.

Hoops,
the worst part about this is Loughlin will be better next year. We agree that it could go either way providing it stays close. From my point of view during that game, MV should have finished a lot of the layups early and just flat out blew it. There was a couple of times when a walk was called on a two on one, and BL would answe back with a 3 pointer seconds later. Back breakers. Goos part about it was, some of the inexpierenced kids got some valuable minutes during a prime time game. I have said this weeks ago, that MV may only loose one more game this year and it could be sometime in March..Not saying that much, on my way to see them get worse against Mamaroneck.
Hoops fan
space,
I remember the early missed layups in the Loughlin game. I think you’re discounting the impact of all the pressure that was put on MV, they were playing at a frenetic pace which leads to mistakes (travels, missed layups). Loughlin has a very long team and a huge big man in the middle, so there were plenty of hands that got in the faces of the MV players. I agree MV likely won’t loose again until the Feds.
I think we’d both agree that basketball is a game of matchups. I just don’t see MV’s wings being able to matchup with Carrington and Williams. MV relies on a pressure D…Loughlin has excellent ballhandlers who clearly handled MV’s press. Loughlin actually handled MV’s pressure better than MV dealt with Loughlin’s pressure. I’m a big fan of Doughty’s game, but I think he is more of a two guard in a point guards body. I’m not sure if this MV has a true pg, which will hurt against strong pressure. I think this MV will do very well against bigger teams without great guard play (like Kearney) but will struggle against a team with very good ball handlers.
