When the CHSFL finalized its football schedules on Tuesday, Kennedy Catholic was included. Although the school still has not announced its move, it appears headed to the CHSAA in the fall.
The Gaels along with local league stalwarts Iona Prep and Stepinac all received their football schedules for the upcoming season. Rather than add a second open date — as I have previously reported — the league has decided to add an additional league game.
It will also no longer align into the AAA, AA and A prior to the playoffs. Every team was ranked and scheduled as one big league. The top eight will qualify for the AAA playoffs; the next eight for the AA; and the remaining teams will be in the A.
And, yes, Iona Prep and Stepinac are still in pursuit of opponents for their open dates. Iona was power ranked No. 3 behind No. 1 St. Anthony’s and No. 2 Chaminade; Stepinac was No. 6.
Below are the schedules for all three teams. Dates represent the weekend the games will be played — not necessarily the actual day.

Also, here’s Nancy Haggerty’s story from today’s paper about Kennedy’s apparent move to the CHSAA slighting its girls’ sports programs:
Kennedy Catholic High School dismissed criticism this week that its proposed move of its sports teams from Section 1 to the Catholic High School Athletic Association could gut its girls sports program, an assertion made by a CHSAA official and some parents.
In part, Kennedy spokesperson Alexander Malecki said that, although the CHSAA does not offer girls lacrosse or field hockey, the school plans to move those teams to an independent league that includes teams like Hackley in Tarrytown and Harvey in Katonah.
The proposed moves have the support of former Kennedy athletic director and current field hockey coach Patty Maurer, who said, “I think it’s a positive thing for the future of the school.”
While part of the shift is clearly fueled by anger over Section 1’s decision this year to place Kennedy’s baseball and boys basketball teams in big-school Class AA due to their success, concerns about future enrollment also play a part.
Kennedy, which is located in Somers, has 556 students — 287 girls and 269 boys. Sixty percent play interscholastic sports, although numbers aren’t broken down by gender.
But, according to the school’s president, Father Mark Vaillancourt, Kennedy is drawing fewer students from Putnam and northern Westchester and more from southern and central Westchester due to the closure of many area Catholic elementary schools.
He argues joining the CHSAA, in which the local region includes nine schools in Manhattan, eight in the Bronx, five on Staten Island and five in Westchester, would attract students.
Malecki said Vaillancourt would wait until hearing what schools Kennedy’s teams would likely play before making a final decision. He said no word is expected for about two weeks.
Section 1, meanwhile, is forming its fall sports schedules including Kennedy. However, on Tuesday the CHSAA released a football schedule with the Gaels included.
Debate has not centered on football but rather girls teams.
Malecki maintained the school is concerned equally about girls and boys teams and no team would be lost if changes proceed.
The CHSAA would allow Kennedy to potentially bolster enrollment by recruiting for sports. Recruiting is banned in state public high school sports leagues.
But parent Jim Hennessy, who wants parents to vote on the matter, questioned whether lost local competition might translate to lower enrollment.
“No report has been presented to parents about cost savings, potential recruitment and how beneficial it would be to the school. The point is the decision is being made under very questionable grounds,” Hennessy said.
Section 1 coordinator Jen Simmons confirmed last week that Kennedy initially sought to keep its girls teams in the section but the section’s constitution prohibits schools from separating teams.
Travel and the quality of opponents’ gyms and fields for girls are at the center of debate.
In an e-mail, Vaillancourt said, “Kennedy would not compete in Manhattan, outside of tournament play, and trips to Staten Island and other remote distances would be reserved for weekends.”
Although declining to name who Vaillancourt spoke to, Malecki, in fact, said all indications are that teams would play a Westchester/Bronx schedule.
But Cardinal Spellman athletic director Jane Morris, the CHSAA’s girls soccer chairperson, said the league schedules by skill level, not geography.
As a result, she said Kennedy’s girls soccer would likely play on Staten Island and other teams would have Manhattan games.
But, moreover, while Vaillancourt said he’d visited most probable competitors and was “confident” in their facilities, Morris described poor conditions at most all-girls schools — tiny, low-ceiling gyms and schools using what she described as “a patch of dirt” for softball.
“Coaches use cans of Ajax (to line them),” she said of some, adding many are time-restricted public fields.
“I just can’t imagine they did research,” she said of Kennedy’s administration. “It’s not that we don’t want you. But you have no idea how far back you’re going. He’s (Vaillancourt’s) hell-bent on doing this for the boys. The boys are not giving anything up.
“In my opinion, they probably should have had scrimmages to see if it’s the right move but to come in blind like this it’s not going to help their program like they think it is.”

PPR,
A few facts you’re missing – Stepinac scrimmaged No Rock two years – I wasn’t there but I heard it wasn’t close. You ask what has Step done in the past 24 months – they played in the CHSFL championship game in 2011 – 14 months ago.
I do think you’re correct that Sect 1 won’t allow their teams an open date to schedule who they want. I don’t understand why they do that, but it clearly limits competition and exposure.
I don’t think Iona/No Rock would be that close. I do think Step/No Rock would be an interesting game…at least if they played last year. No Rock seems to lose a lot from last year’s team – I’m not sure how good they’ll be this year.

Iona is attempting to schedule a game with a program that is better than North Rockland. They are a perennial NYS State Title Contender so I would say that Iona is not afraid of playing good competition.
Why should Iona call anyone else in section 1 for a game if they can’t play New Rochelle- Their are no rivalries in section1 other than New Rochelle- That is why Iona is moving on from any potential section 1 opponent- It would look foolish if Iona plays their 1 non league game against a local team other than New Rochelle. What does Iona have to gain? The answer is NOTHING. Now if they change thier Wilmont Rd address to Scarsdale or Eastchester then they can play either of those schools.

HOOPS.. THE 24 MONTHS I WAS REFERRING TO IONA AND THE 12 MONTHS STEP. WE ALL KNOW A SCRIMMAGE DOES HAVE ANY GAME PLANNING INVOLVED AND I DONOT EVER REMEMBERING A 11ON 11 WITH STEPINAC IN NORTH ROC. I PERSONALLY THINK THAT NORTH ROCK COULD COMPETE WITH IONA B/C CHAMINADE HAS PROVEN TO US THAT THEY DN’T HANDLE POWER PHYSICAL FOOTBALL!!..
I WAITING TO SEE WHO IONA WILL BE SCHEDULING TO PLAY!!.. I THINK ERASMUS THE CITY CHAMPS AND FRONT RUNNER FOR CITY CHAMPS FOR THE NEXT 2YRS.. WOULD BE A VERY GOOD CHOICE FOR IONA!!... NOT SURE IONA HAS COMPETED WITH A TEAM OF EQUAL ATHLETICISM , SIZE AND SPEED AND COACHING!!. AND THE LAST TIME THEY DID THEY LOSS (STEP 2010 TEAM)..
WHAT DOES NEW RO HAVE TO GAIN BY PLAYING IONA!!.. A TEAM WHO HAS BEEN PAPER CHAMPIONS 4 OUT THE PAST 5YRS. BUT ONLY MANAGE 1 CHIP. A TEAM THE DEMOLISH THE LAST 2X THEY PLAYED. IF NEW ROIS NOT PLAYING ANOTHER CHAMPION FROM ANOTHER LEAGUE (SAINT ANTS CHAMPS 12 OUT OF THE PAST 14 YEARS) WHY SHOULD NEW RO SUBJECT THEMSELVES TO PLAYING THEY 2-4 RANKED TEAM IN LEAGUE!!.. LEAGUE CHAMPS SHOULD PLAY OTHER LEAGUE CHAMPS!!!... THERE IS A REASON WHY NEW RO SCRIMMAGES SAINT ANTS EVERY YEAR AND NOT IONA!!.. IT’S A INSULT TO THE CHSFL TO NOT PLAY THE KING OF THE HILL IF YOUR THE KING OF A HILL!!.. #FACT!!
Iona Power, all I say is prove it. Step was going to walk all over MW in the preseason… Week 1 told us otherwise.
I don’t want to discredit Iona but north rock last two yr results have earned ashot at top 5 in chsfl!
JUST WHAT DO NORTH ROC HAS TO DO TO EARN SOME RESPECT AND A GAME!!...

It looks like some smack talk is being aimed at iona. I see where this is going. The facts are that iona is one of the 10 best programs in the state. They have been to 3 championship games in the last 10 years winning one of them and have been to the semifinals the other 7 times. Those are facts. Let’s not spin the facts with the typical anti iona rhetoric which has been the norm. Is bergen catholic a paper champ becuase they have not beaten bosco since 2004. Maybe josh should ask the ner rochelle coach why he does not want to play iona and ask who he wants to schedule instead and ask what his reasoning is behind his decision.
Prince!!!! Exactly!!!!!!
I think Iona afraid to play a north rock because if they lose they can’t say they are top in the state each year.
But losing to north rock really is not a bad thing. They are always top 2 in section1 AA ..
The sports writers and chsfl fanz refuse to give the top of AA the respect it deserves… Though I think josh is coming around on north rock.
North rock will have the D next year. They need a back like a forester to step up if they want a real chance at the title!!!
Ip , I did my best to be fair, I guess u don’t agree…
Ip, if u focus on north rock last two years, tell me why they don’t deserve a shot to play top 5 chsfl team, regardless of what anyone thinks about outcome?
Just
Iona is trying to schedule a team that is a better program than North Rockland so how can you say that Iona is avoiding playing top teams.
I am not saying North Rockland is not a quality team but why should Iona schedule them if they have the chance to play a better program?
I also know that Iona has not spoken about playing any section 1 teams except for New Rochelle
Also Iona has made it clear they will play high level teams.
Just
You made a statement that Iona is afraid of playing North Rockland. Where do you base this off of and do you have facts that support your statement?
Josh
Maybe it is time to explore behind the scenes what has transpired with the scheduling of non league games for Iona and all the rest. I think you need to enlighten the football community.

IP, I think you know I respect your opinion though disagreeat times. But I did not say this:
“Iona is trying to schedule a team that is a better program than North Rockland so how can you say that Iona is avoiding playing top teams.”
I did not say Iona avoiding teams.
I did say they do not want to play North Rock(scared) because they.. IMO… yes IMO… if they were to lose, it could be devastating to their rep. I went on to say it shouldnt because North Rock is a very good program so losing to them is no shame.
Please feel free to post something I said to the contrary.
and for this:
“You made a statement that Iona is afraid of playing North Rockland. Where do you base this off of and do you have facts that support your statement?”
Go to my post. I said I believe it to be… never saidit was fact. I clearly detailed support of my opinion if that is what your asking.

Because unless megatron transfering to RCK and playing with Duke, this one in the bag!
Hey all i was saying is, DOES ANYONE KNOW IF IONA PREP SCHEDULEDED A GAME WEEK ONE YET if they are holding off it will give clarkstown south a chance to play a cath. school, the prep could not wait any longer, understandable, but if iona is waiting for someone and does not get what they want, maybe the vikings could get them if section one gets a fire under their butts, and gets moving with the schedules.
THATS ALL as long as the piner is around,MAYBE TEAMS IN SECTION HAVE A CHANCE TO PLAY SOMEONE OTHER THAN SECTION 1 TEAMS,because any other way scheduling they would not
Just,
You did write Iona was ‘afraid’ to play No Rock. Obviously not a serious or well thought out comment if Iona was trying to schedule New Ro. If your comment is that Iona is “afraid” to schedule No Rock – a fictitious game that no one knows has even been discussed, what term would you use to describe New Ro ACTUALLY turning down the chance to play Iona. New Ro in reality did turn down the chance to play Iona. The comments about No Rock and Iona are not about something that actually happened. Here is your comment:
Just a fact January 25th, 2013 at 5:15 pm
Prince!!!! Exactly!!!!!!
I think Iona afraid to play a north rock because if they lose they can’t say they are top in the state each year.
Toledo,
I didn’t mean to make little of Cl South – they have a good program. But someone reported above that Cl South attempted to schedule Fordham Prep, not Iona Prep. Fordham Prep is a solid program that is usually in the 8-12 range of the CHSFL AAA the last few years. Iona Prep is on a different level than Fordham Prep – when they’ve played recently they’ve been something like 48-7 games. Fordham Prep/Cl South might be an interesting game. Iona Prep is on a different level than both teams. It was reported that Cl South couldn’t even schedule the game against Fordham Prep because Sect 1 couldn’t commit to allow Cl South an open date it week 1. In other words, ALL sect 1 teams are left waiting in the wind for Sect 1 to get it together. Cl South’s coach deserves credit for wanting to step up and play Fordham…I’m sure there are other Sect 1 coaches who would do the same if they could – but they are all stuff waiting for Sect 1 to get it together. Too bad Coach D from New Ro didn’t have the same ‘bring it on’ attitude as the Cl South coach – if he did, New Ro might be playing Iona this year!
Hoops, I think they are afraid because they afraid to lose the ramifications that would follow. They lose to New Ro, no big deal. The PERCEPTION if they were to lose to North Rock would absolutely kill their “cred” as one of the top in the State.
MY opinion. I think IP agrees with me in what he writes. He said the only Section 1 team worthy of Iona is New Ro. And in his words
” if Iona plays their 1 non league game against a local team other than New Rochelle. What does Iona have to gain? The answer is NOTHING.”
That tells me they are scared to lose to another Section 1 team.
Disagree?
But regardless, because I dont want to get into the Sect 1 CHSFL debate.
Just answer this question. Why is North Rock not worthy of a top 5 CHSFL team with what they have done the last two years? Keep in mind last year a section title and this year they only lost to New Ro.
Last year if they did not have three games in 11 days, who knows how far they go. I think they were a very strong defensive and disciplined team last year. They were just beat up going into the States playoffs. They could have made it to the finals. Dont think they would have won but their hands were tied!
Hoops & Iona Power, tell these Catholic schools to hold off and wait a couple more months. We are getting close. Fordham – CSOUTH would be great. Cnorth – Mt ST Mike. Chaminade – NOrth Rock. New Ro – Iona Prep. And while I am at it, POK/Harr – Step.
These are no brainers.
Here is acandidate for re-postin 2017.
By 2017 all these games mentioned above will happen… and Jenn Simmons will be….
GONE!

I know you are a section 1 guy and for the most part reasonable but you are way off if you think Iona is afraid to schedule North Rockland. Currently Iona is trying to schedule a perennial NYS State Title contender who I can tell you is a notch or two above North Rockland. North Rockland is an excellent program with a great history but to my knowledge they have not been discussed. Iona had a first priority to play New Rochelle due to the fact that both schools are in the same city and both programs have been the top 2 programs in the Lower Hudson Valley over the last 10 years. Iona has played the likes of Bergen Catholic, New Caneen, Newburgh and Poly Prep in the last 10 years so they are not backing down from competition. As far as Iona worrying about protecting their credibility that is not an issue as they are secure in their own skin as a program and know they are a top 10 NYS program. The respect that they have received by the Tri-State has been earned as evidenced by their inclusion in different rankings.
Toledo
I respect the fact that your program was looking for a game against a CHSFL team in Fordham Prep. I think it would have been great to play that game at Fordham University – great venue to play a high school game- Good luck in the upcoming season.
IP, they(Iona) definitely have earned respect across the State.
I just think North Rock has earned a shot a one of the CHSFL top 5 teams. You can’t deny it would not look good for Iona if they were to lose to North Rock – again regardless of what we think the outcome would be.
It is like the Champ(like) give the third or 4th ranked contender a shot.
On the other hand, a win by North Rock would be huge step in brining respect back to Section 1 to teams other than New Ro. I understand there has been no talks about Iona – North Rock, I was just responding to you guys saying New Ro the only Section 1 team worthy of Iona.
I disagree. Just look at North Rock last two years. They deserve a shot!
Just
From an Iona perspective it is either play New Rochelle from Section 1 or go outside the Section.
I certainly think playing North Rockland would be a good matchup for a CHSFL team from outside this area- Chaminade – North Rockland or Farrell – North Rockland would be a good game-
Iona should end up with a quality opponent-
Realistically this would have been a good game with New Rochelle – Iona as both teams are reloading after losing deep senior classes.
okay, understand….............good luck to all, hopefully another section one team could get this done….........I know Coach Scarp, was pretty excited to almost have Fordham Prep on the schedule week 1, at fordham university and i belive they were going to play friday night under the lights, will see him tonight…................good luck to whoever will play the other Prep, Iona Prep week 1, they are an excellent program…..........maybe Iona Prep vs. New Canaan????????????????
or New roch / Iona prep?
Okay, good luck to all!
Cant wait to hear the next big news in Section 1
toledotom, heading back to west coast Sunday.
I H8 THE ONE SIDED ….B/S!!!!....
IONA IS A PROGRAM THAT HAS NOT WON ANYTHING LAST YEAR WAS THE FIRST YEAR THEY WHERE RANKED!!! #1 IN THERE LEAGUE!.. TO FEEL NORTH ROC IS NOT WORTHY IS NONSENSE THERE IS NO PROOF THAT IONA IS BETTER THEN NORTH ROCKLAND!!
“Realistically this would have been a good game with New Rochelle – Iona as both teams are reloading after losing deep senior classes.”
IP, my source
said the same thing. But my source also said one of the reasons new ro did not want to play was they were re to oling. That I dont buy. Coach D mentality he fight anywhere any place. He doesn’t want to mess with the practice set up and he might be souring some old timers who want the game!!! All speculation – what I do best!
Just,
Clearly Coach D’s mentality is NOT ‘he fight anywhere any place’...if it was, there would be a New Ro/Iona game next year. Sorry, but thats obvious.
PPR,
You love to point out that certain programs haven’t won anything. Well, Iona did win the CHSFL AAA in 2008 which was not that long ago. But lets look at your point more closely. Bergen Catholic hasn’t “won” anything recently – did that mean they are not an elite program? Of course not, teams that play in big time leagues against better competition won’t win as many championships as teams that play in weaker leagues – that is common sense. Prior to this season, New Ro hadn’t won the NYPHSAA title in awhile…did that mean they weren’t a top program in NYS? Of course not. New Ro was still a top program in NYS prior to this season even though they hadn’t won a state title in 7-8 years.
HOOPS
YOU GUYS ARE SILLY CONSTANTLY COMPARING BERGEN TO ” NOTHING BUT HYPE” IONA AND STEPINAC!!.. THE TEAM IN FRONT OF THEM IS NOTA NJ POWER HOUSE!!!... THERE A NATIONAL POWER HOUSE!!... BERGEN DOES NOT RESPECT THE CHSFL!!.. GET LOST WITH THAT NONSENSE!!... SAINT ANTS IS NOT A NATIONAL POWER HOUSE!!!... AND WINNING A 2008 CHIP!!.. OVER!!....THERE HAVE BEEN 4 CHAMPIONS SINCE IONA!!...PLEASE STOP WITH THE NONSENSE!!....
Iona = new paper hype!!!...#fact
STEPINAC= jock strap riders of IONA!!!...#fact

What was your take on stepinac being ranked preseason 6 and Iona 3
Also xaverian with a new coach will look to rebuild. It will be interesting to see how st Anthony rebounds from a championship game loss
“Just,
Clearly Coach D’s mentality is NOT ‘he fight anywhere any place’...if it was, there would be a New Ro/Iona game next year. Sorry, but thats obvious.”
Hoops!!! I love this post!!! Comments like this might ignite coach D to play “the game”..
Just,
That was my intention!
IP,
I think Iona #3 made sense since they were part of the top 3 last year that was far and away better than the rest of the league. SJBS deserved #4 – they finished #4 this year and return their QB and top 3 RBs. I can’t remember if it was Farrell or Holy Cross at #5. If it was HC, it makes sense since they beat Stepinac last year (in a very close game) and return their two excellent backs Pelzer and Francklin. If Farrell is #5 it makes sense because their JV tied Stepinac for tops in the league and I think their frosh team was very good – they also played a lot of underclassmen on varsity and return a very good lefty starting QB Aranda I would’ve picked Stepinac ahead of Farrell personally, but doesn’t seem like a major slight.
PPR,
Bergen Catholic may not have much respect for any NY team. No top teams in NJ respect New Ro – thats for sure after New Ro lost to North Bergen last year. At least Bergen Catholic respected Iona enough to play a game a few years ago. But you’re missing the point of my initial comments – I’m not comparing Iona to BC, I’m pointing out that Bergen Catholic is an elite football program, but hasn’t won any league titles in awhile. Teams playing in top leagues can be considered a top program even without winning a league championship in a few years.
Hoops Fan
NJ Football is way ahead of NY- Bergen Catholic beat St. Anthony in convincing fashion and of course a .500 North Bergen team beat a NYS Public Champion in New Rochelle- What makes that loss really bad was the fact that St. Peters beat North Bergen 50 -0. New York football has a lot of work to do in getting to the NJ level.
Just
New Rochelle declining to play Iona does not make Coach D look to good.- You can’t use the excuse that they are retooling because all top programs retool each year- Iona will be very young next year so they are retooling as well- Iona does have a big time sophomore class this year that should be ready to play key roles next year as juniors.
“New Rochelle declining to play Iona does not make Coach D look to good.”
IP, these posts should get coach d’s ire!!!!
Then fire!!!
Then new ro 35, Iona 14!!!
Ps . Just for fun I hope Iona holds their date open until after sect1 hands out the schedule. Because it will not look good should new ro decline if everything else falls in line! The truth will come out at that point.
St peters. Was a top 5 program in NJ!!.. North Bergen was not!!.... New Ro was concern with escaping without injuries!!.. They had a commanding lead 20-0!!....
Saint and Iona went to nj POSING ass a “ELITE” program!!. And they did not compete!!.. that’s considered verrrrrrrrry embarrassing!.. And a true black eye to New York football!!...
confused as to why my comment wasnt posted..
Just
Iona has moved on from New Rochelle- I know for a fact they were told point blank by Coach D that he did not want to play the game-
Iona is talking to two potential teams outside of section 1.
IP, like I have previous stated, if this true, whenever these teams are tie in the opinion of the writers, Iona should get the nod with the caveat listed of what u stated above.
just
I have been referred to on this blog as a liar- I guess my statements on this topic are factual- I am glad you cleared this up as unfortunately the reporters on this blog allowed an individual to refer to me as a liar when in fact my statements were correct.
Hopefully New Rochelle finds a quality non league opponent and has a good year next year.

Prince, I think Taivon Jacobs got that X factor type speed. O shoul I say Tavon Austin type speed. You only need to watch how he continually out runs everyone on the field. Makes it look to easy. Some very nice hands out and 3.3 gpa. Ohio St. great choice.
Landon Collins, I thought was an excellent tackler. Made plays too. did not show a lot of film covering guys one on one. But the fact he is 6 ft and sure tackler, great safety. Two things though. I liked watching him run. Not a bad RB. And his film at a fast speed. Watch how fast the refs are running. Killz me!!!
Thoughts?
IP, I saw Prince call guys that said everything was set up and New Ro declined liars. He was right since officially it is impossible since schedules not handed out in Sect 1. But I do believe the were talks behind the scenes and what you say did happen.
Two different discussions though.
