Jan. 22: Predictions for the #GOTW

Posted By Dan DeFrancesco On January 22, 2013 @ 12:00 pm In Boys Basketball,Predictions | Comments Disabled

It might have taken awhile, but Josh and I finally did.

The perfect #GOTW.

Josh and I had identical picks last week, and wouldn’t you know that we went a perfect 4-0 [1]. For those of you unclear on what that means: We picked every game correctly.

Now I do have to mention there is a bit of an asterisk involved with last week’s #GOTW. No, we didn’t take performance enhancing drugs. As you may have noticed, we went 4-0 not 5-0 last week. The reason we were one game short was due to the Mahopac-Somers game being rescheduled due to the snowstorm.

As much as I loved being perfect last week, I’m not going to lie: It felt a little tainted. Call me greedy but I want that perfect 5-0 mark.

Did we get these right? Are we really off? Drop us a line on Twitter and let your voice be heard. Also, send us some suggestions for next weeks #GOTW (Jan. 28-Feb. 3). Tweet Josh (@LoHudInsider [2]) or me (@LoHud_DeFran [3]) and hashtag your games of the week #GOTW.

2012-13 Records —
Josh: 16-11
Dan: 18-9

Somers at Mahopac, 5 p.m. —
Josh: Mahopac, 58-51. Somers is on a hot streak, but so is Mahopac. And I think Mahopac has the higher ceiling. I don’t think either team will stop the other’s star, but the Indians boast the stronger supporting cast.
Dan: Mahopac, 57-50.
Nothing has changed from last week. I’ve said it all year, the development of the Indians’ big men will define how far they make it this year. Ryan Simone has put together some nice games recently to complement Brendan Hynes. Still, Somers has what I like to call “The John Decker Factor”, just ask Brewster [4].

Saturday —
Panas vs. Carmel at Mahopac, 4 p.m. —
Josh: Panas, 66-55. The Panthers seem to have figured out how to close games. They’ve beat better teams than Carmel. With the inconsistency seemingly behind them, I’d be surprised if they didn’t outlast the Rams.
Dan: Panas, 62-54. What a turnaround for the Panthers. I guess beating a team for the first time in 18 years can do that for you. I think the good times continue for Panas as they get another big win, this one coming against a AA school.

New Rochelle vs. North Rockland at Clarkstown South, 6 p.m. —
Josh: New Rochelle, 71-65. New Ro is a tough team to figure out, but I don’t think North Rockland can exploit the Huguenots’ main weakness (handling pressure). Either way, this is a potential County Center preview — and it should be close. It’s also North Rockland’s toughest test yet.
Dan: New Rochelle, 63-58. I have switched my pick at least three times on this game. North Rockland is the easier team to trust, having played well consistently, albeit for their slip up against Spring Valley. On the other hand you have New Rochelle. I have no idea what to make of the Huguenots. The Red Raiders schedule has been a cakewalk compared to the gauntlet New Rochelle has gone through. I think that’s the difference.

Scarsdale at Clarkstown South, 4 p.m. —
Josh: Scarsdale, 59-54. Interesting game. Last season, at South, Mike McCahey and the Vikings absolutely tore through the Raiders. It was never even a game. Scarsdale has shown vast improvement so far and will now catch South during a patch of adversity. Jack Hewitt should have a strong showing inside against the Vikings’ undersized front line.
Dan: Scarsdale, 55-43. I think size plays a huge factor in this game as the Vikings have a tough time having anyone match up with the Raiders big man Jack Hewitt.

Peekskill at Mahopac, 6 p.m. —
Josh: Peekskill, 77-75 (OT). I just have a feeling — a strong, strong feeling — that this will be a late-night classic. Peekskill is in need of a strong win. Mahopac has been rolling. They’ll cross paths late on a Saturday night before a pretty good crowd. I can really see it going either way, but I think the Red Devils will be hungry for something to jumpstart their season. This could be it.
Dan: Mahopac, 65-62. Wow. For me this was the hardest one to pick of the week. The front court battle between these two teams should be amazing. When it comes down to it, I have to tip my hat in the Indians’ favor because of the home court advantage. I was there for their home opener against Horace Greeley and the Mahopac fans did not disappoint. I don’t see them letting up during such an important game.
